Ethiopia is situated in the Horn of Africa and is the second most populous country on the continent with an estimated population of 115 million. It borders six African countries: Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan, and covers 1,104,300 square kilometers. Approximately 85 percent of the population lives in rural areas. Ethiopia represents a melting pot of ancient cultures with Middle Eastern and African cultures evident in the religious, ethnic, and language composition of its people.
Over the past two years, children and their families across Ethiopia faced multiple and complex emergencies, such as the conflict in the northern Ethiopia and the drought, which resulted in millions of people in need of urgent humanitarian assistance. UNICEF has programmes in Child Protection, WASH, Health, Nutrition, Social Policy, and Education and serves over 15 million children in Ethiopia. Purpose of the internship:ย
UNICEF Ethiopiaโs Learning and Development (Education) section focuses on Strengthening access to quality education at the primary education level, implementing early learning and school readiness, revision of school curricula, improving life skills education, strengthening school gender clubs, and engaging communities to support girlsโ education, systems strengthening, and working on disability-inclusive programming. Estimates for the number of persons with disabilities in Ethiopia range from 7.8 million (9.3 percent of the population) to 15 million (17.6 percent) with an estimated 55 percent being children. Persons with disabilities in Ethiopia are amongst the poorest and most marginalized groups. In urban areas, the extreme poverty rate for persons with disabilities is 41 percent higher than for people without disabilities, with children having the highest rate of extreme poverty. Multi-dimensional child poverty for children with disabilities impacts every aspect of a household, including their access to education and affordability of other basic services (Health, Nutrition, Social policy, WASH, and protection). The situation for children with disabilities in Ethiopia is exacerbated by recurring climate change-induced disasters, public health emergencies, and conflict.ย ย
How can you make a difference?ย
UNICEF supports students, schools, and teachers across the country with teaching and materials, training, and technical support. We also support formal and non-formal learning opportunities for children in emergencies and development situations.ย
The intern is expected to work closely with the Education team and other UNICEF programme sections to support the identification and development of partnerships with disability person organizations (DPOs), support the data and knowledge management needs relating to disability-inclusive programming, and support the overall disability mainstreaming within UNICEF programming.ย ย
Under the supervision of the Education Manager output 2, the intern will undertake the following tasks:ย
Support to Education programme on how to mainstream disability inclusion.ย ย Provide administrative and technical inputs in disability inclusion meetings with multiple stakeholders.ย Collect relevant data on disability, analyse the findings, and prepare briefing notes and reports on assigned disability-related subject areas of interest to UNICEF, Donors, and partners.ย Assist in documenting and cataloguing disability-related information and collating relevant information on disability collected from multiple stakeholders.ย Conduct a literature review on existing research on disability and share Key findings that aligned and relevant for UNICEF programming.ย Assist in organizing events and facilitating on disability inclusion (training events, workshops, seminars, conferences, missions, etc.) and draft/edit reports of the same as may be required.ย Undertake other tasks from the supervisor.ยTo qualify as an advocate for every child you will haveโฆย
Knowledge of relevant computer systems and applications; excellent knowledge of MS Office is required.ย ย Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team.ย ย Flexible and open to learning and new experiences.ย ย Respect for diversity and adaptability to other cultures and working environments. Enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. degree program in social sciences or have graduated within the past two years. ย Must be at least 18 years old. ย Have excellent academic performance as demonstrated by recent university or institution records. Experience working with children with disabilities (or adults with disabilities), or working on disability inclusion in education, or/and experience with oneโs own disability.
