Result of ServiceThe consultant will lead the design and coordination of landfill and food waste methane studies under the IMEOโs methane science studies, support drafting of IMEO waste strategy, and provide guidance in the development of IMEOโs science strategy for other sectors, including agriculture. Work LocationRemote Expected duration12-months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe UN Environment Programmeโs International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is a data-driven, action-focused initiative that drives deep reductions in methane emissionsโ the second biggest contributor to global climate change and a key opportunity to reduce warming in the near-term. IMEOโs mission is to provide the open, reliable, and actionable methane data needed to cut emissions at the speed and scale necessary to achieve the Paris Agreement goals. To do this, IMEO is harnessing a methane data revolution under way thanks to rapidly advancing technology and momentum for methane action. IMEO collects, integrates, and reconciles data from methane-detecting satellites, scientific measurement studies, rigorous industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national emissions inventories. These initiatives are game-changers for climate action โ and as a core implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge, IMEO is shaping the future of methane mitigation. The senior waste scientist will provide leadership and technical guidance in the IMEO Methane Science Studies in the waste sector, including drafting the waste strategy for IMEO and provide guidance in other sectors including agriculture. Roles and Responsibilities: The consultant will support IMEO in the characterization of methane emissions from the waste sector by designing and coordinating waste methane science studies. โข Lead the design, planning and execution of IMEOโs methane measurement campaigns related to the IMEO waste studies, including landfill and food waste โข Support the design of IMEO waste strategy โข Supervise the quality assurance of data from field measurements โข Oversee the analysis and interpretation of the measurement data sets โข Provide support to other current IMEO methane science project efforts as needed, and support the development of potential future agriculture and biogas projects โข Present scientific and policy-relevant results from this work to internal committees and at major conferences on waste methane emissions and other areas of expertise as suitable. Performance indicators will be the following: โข The effectiveness and management of the work. โข Quality, reliability, and pertinence of gathered information. โข Usefulness and quality of the information and recommendations provided to UNEP staff. โข Speediness and quality of emails and communications with UNEP staff. The consultant will in close consultation with the UN Environment Programme Paris Office. The outputs need to be accepted by the UNEP to be considered satisfactory. The consultant will report to the relevant Programme Management Officer. Qualifications/special skillsPhD in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or relevant field (required) More than 10 years of research experience in methane emissions from the waste sector. Track record of leading and coordinating scientific studies collecting empirical data to better understand GHG emissions and/or air pollution is required. Knowledge and research experience in methane emissions measurement and management. Demonstrated scientific expertise, including but not limited to a record of scholarly publications and/or involvement in scientific panels is required. Knowledge and research experience in measurement of methane emissions from other sectors โ ideally agriculture and biogas (desirable) LanguagesEnglish and French are working languages of the United Nations.
