Work LocationRemote Expected duration12 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesUN Environment Programme (Mitigation Branch) hosts the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO). IMEO is a data-driven, action-focused UNEP initiative that takes an innovative approach to address the methane emissions problem by collecting, integrating, and reconciling data from different sources, including scientific measurement studies, satellites, rigorous industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national inventories. IMEO will create a global public dataset of empirically verified methane emissions, with an initial focus on fossil fuel sources and will interconnect data with actions on research, reporting, and regulation. This will catalyse deep reductions in human-made methane emissions and serve the rapidly growing ecosystem of governments, companies, investors, researchers, NGOs and other entities engaging in this crucial climate challenge. IMEO seeks a scientist that will work on the integration of empirical methane emissions data from diverse spatial and temporal scales to produce high quality actionable data products that will be the core of IMEO’s data platform, centered to individuals with the power to reduce emissions. The work will include creating structures and processes to integrate existing and future emissions data from multiple sources (e.g., remote sensing, source and site-level measurement campaigns, inventories), performing intercomparison and validation projects to assess the quality of the data. The work will not only be focused on the oil and gas sector but also on the other methane emitting sectors. The IMEO methane data scientist will support work related to the Methane Science Studies, that will also be part of the data integration, to improve our understanding of anthropogenic emission sources and to contribute to closing the knowledge gap on and where methane is being emitted across the planet and tracking progress over time. The work will involve collaboration with the relevant stakeholders, including national authorities, regional organizations, civil society, and experts. Qualifications/special skillsRecent or pending PhD in atmospheric sciences, engineering, geology or a related field. Demonstrated statistical analysis and strong quantitative analysis skills are required, including but not limited to publications, certifications and experience Ability to synthesize, interpret, and communicate scientific data in an advocacy setting and for non-scientific populations. Three or more years of relevant experience is preferred. Relevant work/research experience on science related to atmospheric greenhouse gases (GHG), in particular methane emissions from anthropogenic sources, is preferred. Familiarity with emissions inventories, and knowledge of measurement-based methane emissions data is preferred. Experience in performing rigorous analysis with short deadlines in support of highly visible work is preferred. LanguagesBe fluent in written and spoken English. Other languages are an asset. Additional InformationThe scientist will support IMEO in the development of the data products that will be part of the IMEO data platform by enhancing IMEO’s data integration efforts from various data sources at different temporal and spatial scales. Data integration and data platform: • Perform intercomparison and validation projects to assess the quality of available emissions data. • Develop data integration case studies. • Define data structures and processes to ingest diverse emission data streams (e.g., remote sensing data, science studies, industry self-reported data, inventories). Methane Science Studies: • Work with the science team to identify regions and countries that may be feasible for scientific measurement study • Engage stakeholders to present opportunity and agree to collaborate with IMEO on science studies Other engagement: • Provide support to other IMEO’s methane project efforts when needed. • Ensure scientific rigor of IMEO generated materials, initiatives, and collaborations with diverse stakeholders, including industry, academics, and the public sector. • Participate and represent IMEO at external meetings, interacting with the scientific community in general. • Present scientific and policy-relevant results from this work to internal committees and at major conferences. Performance indicators will be the following: • The effectiveness and management of the work • Speediness and quality of emails and communications with UNEP staff. The consultant will in close consultation with the UN Environment Programme Paris Office. The outputs need to be accepted by the UNEP to be considered satisfactory.
