Work LocationRemote Expected duration12 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesUN Environment Programme (Mitigation Branch) hosts the International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO). IMEO is a data-driven, action-focused UNEP initiative that takes an innovative approach to address the methane emissions problem by collecting, integrating, and reconciling data from different sources, including scientific measurement studies, satellites, rigorous industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national inventories. IMEO will create a global public dataset of empirically verified methane emissions, with an initial focus on fossil fuel sources and will interconnect data with actions on research, reporting, and regulation. This will catalyse deep reductions in human-made methane emissions and serve the rapidly growing ecosystem of governments, companies, investors, researchers, NGOs and other entities engaging in this crucial climate challenge. IMEO seeks an analyst that will support the integration of empirical methane emissions data from diverse spatial and temporal scales to produce high quality actionable data products that will be the core of IMEO’s data platform, centered to individuals with the power to reduce emissions. The work will include executing detailed analysis of data from the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP2.0), identifying, collecting, and analyzing methane data from external databases, and researching the methane scientific literature for empirical data. The work will not only be focused on the oil and gas sector but also on the other methane emitting sectors. The IMEO methane data analyst will support the creation of various methane data integration products to expand insights into our understanding of anthropogenic emission sources and to contribute to closing the knowledge gap on and where methane is being emitted across the planet and tracking progress over time. Qualifications/special skillsBA or BS in atmospheric sciences, engineering, geology or a related field. - Relevant work/research experience on science related to atmospheric greenhouse gases (GHG). - Familiarity with scientific literature in the field of atmospheric sciences or related. - Familiarity with emissions inventories, and knowledge of measurement-based methane emissions data is preferred. - Experience with data compilation and/or databases preferred - Three or more years of relevant study or work experience - Communication: Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and the ability to work with partners of diverse backgrounds and experience. - Teamwork: Works collaboratively with colleagues in the IMEO team to achieve organizational goals; is willing to learn from others; Supports and acts following final group decision, even when such decisions may not entirely reflect own position. Demonstrates cultural awareness and enthusiasm for solving environmental problems through projects based on science and solutions-focused advocacy. Is able to work with colleagues and partners of varied backgrounds and experience. - Planning & Organizing: Ability to plan, prioritize and deliver tasks effectively and on time LanguagesFluency in written and oral English. Knowledge of other UN languages is an asset. Additional InformationThe analyst will support IMEO in the development of the data products that will be part of IMEO’s internal database as well as IMEO’s externally facing data platform by collecting and analyzing data relevant to OGMP2.0 as well as other empirical data available externally and in IMEO’s database. OGMP2.0 and data integration: • Assist the OGMP2.0 team with analyses to complete the annual industry reporting cycle. • Perform analyses at the intersection between the OGMP2.0 and data integration support teams such as retrieving industry reporting and O&G infrastructure data from multiple databases. • Bridge the analytical activities in cross-organizational workstream including OGMP2.0, data integration, data platform, and data architecture. Methane Science Studies: • Contribute to IMEO’s emission data repository by ingesting diverse emission data streams (e.g., remote sensing data, science studies, industry self-reported data, inventories) into IMEO’s database. • Support the maintenance of IMEO’s emission data repository by collaborating with external data providers to enhance the quality of the repository.
