IMEO Communications Specialist

Result of ServiceThe Communications Specialist will provide communications support across IMEO’s private and public sector-facing workstreams, including its Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0, Steel Methane Programme, Government and Stakeholder Engagement Projects. The individual will create and help promote outreach-focused content to influence key stakeholder groups and drive engagement with IMEO data products and initiatives. Work LocationParis with remote possible Expected duration12 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe UN Environment Programme’s International Methane Emissions Observatory (IMEO) is a data-driven, action-focused initiative that drives deep reductions in methane emissions– the second biggest contributor to global climate change and a key opportunity to reduce warming in the near-term. IMEO’s mission is to provide the open, reliable, and actionable methane data needed to cut emissions at the speed and scale necessary to achieve the Paris Agreement goals. To do this, IMEO is harnessing a methane data revolution under way thanks to rapidly advancing technology and momentum for methane action. IMEO collects, integrates, and reconciles data from methane-detecting satellites, scientific measurement studies, rigorous industry reporting through the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0), and national emissions inventories. These initiatives are game-changers for climate action – and as a core implementing partner of the Global Methane Pledge, IMEO is shaping the future of methane mitigation. The Communications Specialist consult will provide communications support across IMEO’s private and public sector-facing workstreams, including its Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0, Steel Methane Programme, Government and Stakeholder Engagement Projects. The consultant will report to Giulia Ferrini, Programme Management Officer. The consultant will develop and execute communications plans, maintain consistent messaging aligned with UNEP and IMEO branding, manage communications calendars, and support media, outreach, and educational efforts. The role also involves coordinating communications for events and trainings, producing related materials, and managing engagement within IMEO’s networks and online platforms. Additionally, the specialist will contribute to IMEO’s content strategy by creating and editing written, digital, and multimedia materials such as blogs, reports, press releases, and videos. They will support publication development, oversee updates to IMEO’s web presence, and collaborate with the Digital Media Expert to enhance outreach across web and social media channels. Experience with analytics, KPI tracking, and email marketing tools is considered an advantage. Qualifications/special skillsUndergraduate and/or Graduate degree in communications, media, or a related field. Minimum five to seven years of experience in communications, content strategy, and/or journalism, preferably related to climate, energy sector, or stakeholder communications. Impeccable writing and editing skills, with experience in roles translating complex topics into clear and concise messaging for diverse audiences. Proactive and attentive to detail with exceptional analytical and research skills. Demonstrated ability to deliver appealing and impactful content against occasionally tight deadlines. Demonstrated experience collaborating across workstreams and subject matter experts to generate stories and tailor them for specific audiences. Track record of solutions-oriented and proactive working approach, with strong project management skills, ability to meet deadlines, and commitment to continuous improvement. LanguagesFull fluency in English. Additional language fluency is a plus. Additional InformationStrategic Communications Support Develop and implement communications plans supporting IMEO workstreams including its Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0, Steel Methane Programme, Government and Stakeholder Engagement Projects. Maintain messaging and speaking points to support proactive communications, media interviews, education and outreach efforts across these workstreams. Track upcoming announcements, work products, events and other communications needs from relevant projects to ensure they are reflected in IMEO’s communications calendar and planning. Ensure consistent alignment with UNEP and IMEO’s overall communications, messaging and brand identity. Familiarity with Google analytics and KPI tracking is a plus. Event & Network Communications Coordinate communications planning in support of IMEO events, such as the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0’s annual conference, training workshops and external-facing activations or events featuring IMEO experts. Support creation of event materials including agendas, speaker briefs, presentations, multimedia assets, promotional content and follow-up communications. Manage content and monitor engagement within IMEO’s Methane Training alumni network, including associated LinkedIn group and monthly updates. Collaborate with IMEO project teams and IMEO’s Digital Media Expert to support creation of outreach-focused content such as case studies, event summaries, FAQs and other collateral. Experience with analytics and conversion metrics, and email platforms is a plus. Familiarity with email marketing platforms, creation, deployment and analytics tracking is an advantage. Content Development & Promotion Contribute to regular editorial meetings, generating ideas and supporting implementation of IMEO content strategy. Create, edit, and proofread written and digital content, such as blogs, press releases, video scripts, factsheets, reports, and other materials. Provide editorial support across communications priorities as needed, including supporting development of IMEO publications and other cross-cutting materials. Advance multimedia content alongside the Digital Media Expert by procuring photo and video assets, scripting and storyboarding videos, scoping graphic design products, and drafting or revising web copy for relevant pages. Ensure timely updates of the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0’s website and relevant unep.org project pages in coordination with the Digital Media Expert. Collaborate with the Digital Media Expert to effectively leverage IMEO’s web and social channels in support of relevant projects.
