5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesThe fundamental mission of UNICEF is to promote the rights of every child, everywhere, in everything the organization does โ€” in programs, in advocacy and in operations. The equity strategy, emphasizing the most disadvantaged and excluded children and families, translates this commitment to childrenโ€™s rights into action. For UNICEF, equity means that all children have an opportunity to survive, develop and reach their full potential, without discrimination, bias or favouritism. To the degree that any child has an unequal chance in life โ€” in its social, political, economic, civic and cultural dimensions โ€” her or his rights are violated. There is growing evidence that investing in the health, education, hygiene/sanitation and protection of a societyโ€™s most disadvantaged citizens โ€” addressing inequity โ€” not only will give all children the opportunity to fulfil their potential but also will lead to sustained growth and stability of countries. This is why the focus on equity is so vital. It accelerates progress towards realizing the human rights of all children, which is the universal mandate of UNICEF, as outlined by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, while also supporting the equitable development of nations.

ContextIn emergency settings such as Cabo Delgado, Mozambique, access to clear, actionable and user-friendly child protection materials is critical for frontline workers, caregivers, and community members. A variety of CP materialsโ€”including toolkits, handouts, visual guides, and awareness-raising resourcesโ€”are under revision to better support the needs of affected populations. Many existing materials are text-heavy or overly technical and need to be redesigned to enhance accessibility, comprehension, and usability, especially in low-literacy or resource-limited environments. This assignment will support the visual adaptation and graphic design of child protection materials, includingโ€”but not limited toโ€”tools for adolescent engagement, case management, prevention of violence, and community-based child protection interventions.

Task DescriptionWe are seeking one (or more) Online Volunteer(s) with strong graphic design skills to support the Child Protection team in creating visually engaging and user-friendly materials for use in emergency contexts. Working under the guidance of the Child Protection and Communications teams, the volunteer will: โ€ข Collect input on the purpose, audience, and use of each material, including accessibility and cultural considerations. โ€ข Propose visual concepts and templates that align with UNICEFโ€™s branding and the needs of field-based facilitators and users. โ€ข Redesign and layout various materials, which may include: o Condensed facilitator guides o Participant handouts and activity sheets o Infographics, icons, and illustrations to simplify complex information o Awareness posters or community-facing visuals โ€ข Ensure the final designs adhere to UNICEFโ€™s corporate branding guidelines. โ€ข Provide editable source files for future adaptation. Expected Deliverables โ€ข A finalized set of visually designed and formatted materials ready for dissemination in the field. โ€ข Editable design files (e.g., InDesign, Illustrator, PowerPoint, Canva) to allow for future updates. โ€ข A short guidance note on how to use and adapt the materials in training or awareness sessions.
