UNDP has been present in Malawi since 1964. UNDPโs Country Programme Document is closely aligned to the Malawi Agenda 2063 and supports Malawiโs aim to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. UNDP โs programme is designed to address the interlinked issues of poverty, inequality and vulnerability to shocks and is managed within two portfolios: Responsive Institutions and Citizen Engagement which works towards strengthening effective, accountable and inclusive governance that promotes civic engagement, respect for human rights, rule of law, peace and democracy. It also works towards strengthening data generation and analysis. ContextThe 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) is a global campaign commemorated every year from 25th November, which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10th December, the Human Rights Day. The campaign was initiated in 1991 by a group of activists at the inaugural Womenโs Global Leadership Institute and is used as an organizing strategy by governments, organizations and individuals around the world to call for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls. The Campaign became an efficient and effective tool to raise public awareness against Gender Based Violence particularly violence against women and girls. Malawi started commemorating the 16 Days of Activism in 2001 and over the years the campaign has significantly raised awareness and mobilized support towards the elimination of Gender Based Violence.
