UNHCR is the Global Cluster Lead Agency for the Global Protection Cluster (GPC) which is responsible for the protection coordination of the humanitarian response in disaster and complex emergencies under the overall leadership of the Emergency Relief Coordinator. The GPC unites members, partners and communities working on the full gamut of protection activities, including in four specialized Areas of Responsibility (AoRs): Child Protection (CP), Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Housing, Land and Property (HLP) and Mine Action (MA).

To ensure that the GPC discharges its responsibilities, the GPC Operations Cell has been established within the Global Protection Cluster Unit of the Division of International Protection at UNHCR Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland. The Operations Cell supports field clusters in their responsibility to craft an appropriate response and provides critical support to the Global Cluster Coordinator by monitoring the GPCโ€™s Workplan, influencing planning and resource mobilization.

The position

Under the direct supervision of the GPC Head of Advocacy, Communications and Partner Engagement, the incumbent will be responsible, as part of the GPC Operations Cell, for providing support to the Advocacy, Engagement and Communication strategic area lead in carrying out his/her functions.

Duties and Responsibilities

โ€ข Support the work of the GPC Head of Advocacy, Communication and Partner Engagement together with GPC relevant partners on GPC work-streams; including AoRs and Task Teams, UNHCR innovation services and academia to create a stronger profile of the clusterโ€™s work at global and country level.
โ€ข Support existing and new communication and information channels, to increase the visibility of GPC activities in the field and at global level.
โ€ข Regularly update the GPC website, including web pages of the Field Protection Clusters, Task Teams, and on news, events and publications.
โ€ข Support with the design of flagship GPC publications, such as reports and Protection Updates.
โ€ข Support the development of GPC communications materials such as social cards, flyers, presentations, short videos, promotional content, and infographics.
โ€ข Ensure the GPCโ€™s visibility through development and maintenance of consistent branding across external platforms.
โ€ข Assist with the dissemination of key GPC information and updates to targeted audiences. Help to update distribution lists.
โ€ข Assist in the organisation, preparation, recording and follow-up of Workshops, Conferences and Annual Meetings of the GPC.
โ€ข Assist with the drafting of presentations for external and internal meetings.
โ€ข Participate, as appropriate, in external and internal coordination meetings. Where requested, take notes and minutes of the meetings.

Eligibility

To be considered for an internship, candidates must:

- be a recent graduate* or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO
- have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant to, or of interest to, the work of the organization; and
- not have immediate relatives (father, mother, brother, or sister) working for UNHCR as a staff member on any contract type or as an affiliate at the time of application.
*Recent graduates are considered to be candidates who completed their studies within two years of applying for an internship with UNHCR.

Desirable qualifications and skills

โ€ข Have a bachelorโ€™s degree in law, political science, social science, communication, computer science, web design or related field.
โ€ข Have a graduate degree completed or enrolled in a programme related to law, political science, social science, communication, computer science, web design or related field.
โ€ข Have knowledge of the UN system and the humanitarian community, and familiarity with the Humanitarian Reform and Cluster Approach.
โ€ข Have strong design and analytical skills, including knowledge of design software such as Canva and InDesign.
โ€ข Have experience with web design, with a solid understanding of the concepts of user experience, user interface design principles and conceptual design.
โ€ข Have strong content production skills or interest (video or graphic design software, etc.).
โ€ข Have experience managing public dissemination platforms, such as YouTube.
โ€ข Have advanced knowledge of corporate software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat.
โ€ข Have knowledge of protection-related guidelines, standards and indicators.
โ€ข Have experience in IDP and/or refugee operations.
โ€ข Have excellent written and oral presentation skills, with attention to detail.
โ€ข Be able to work in a dynamic and multi-cultural environment.
โ€ข Have a passion for working in an organization that aims to protect people forced to flee.
โ€ข Have excellent knowledge of English and working knowledge of another UN language (French, Spanish and Arabic would be an asset).

Conditions

This internship is full time (40 hours per week) Monday to Friday. The successful candidate will be assigned to support the team in Geneva, Switzerland; however, bearing in mind COVID-19 imposed restrictions, remote working arrangements are possible, and working from home will in any case sometimes be required.

Allowance

Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to partially help support costs related to food, local transportation and living expenses.
