This work includes coordinating the Regional Initiative for the Assessment of Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources and Socio-Economic Vulnerability in the Arab Region (RICCAR), which advances the use regional climate models and projections to inform science-based policy and priority-setting for climate action. The Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development (AFESD) is collaborating with ESCWA to prepare country fact sheets based on RICCAR methodologies and outputs that have been developed with the support of the Government of Sweden. Objective The consultant will contribute to the finalization of 22 country fact sheets that provide geospatial mapping and analysis of climate change impacts on Arab States in the English and Arabic languages. Duties and responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Sustainable Development Officer and the overall supervision of the Climate Change and Natural Resource Sustainability Cluster Lead, the consultant would: • Contribute to the finalization of country geospatial datasets by verification of administrative boundaries for 22 Arab states; • Conduct zonal analysis to obtain and tabulate statistical information by country from provided climate raster datasets; • Contribute to the finalization of maps for the issuance of technical materials in English and Arabic; • Provide related ad hoc support, such as contribution of maps and analysis for PowerPoint presentations and technical materials. Qualifications/special skillsA master’s degree in geography, climate change, engineering or environmental science is required. A Ph.D. is desirable. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. A minimum of five years of experience working on geospatial research and analysis is required. Previous professional experience working with geospatial datasets related to climate change is required. Experience working in the Arab region is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required. Note: “Fluency” equals a rating of ‘fluent’ in all four areas (speak, read, write, and understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of ‘confident’ in two of the four areas.
