Mission and objectivesUNHCRโs work in Afghanistan focuses on protecting the most vulnerable and assisting newly displaced Afghans with life-saving shelter, food, water and core relief items, both within Afghanistan and neighbouring countries. Together with our partners, we are committed to staying on the ground and delivering our emergency response as long as we can access those in need.
ContextOn 31 August 2025 at 23:47 local time, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Nangarhar Province in eastern Afghanistan. The epicentre was located approximately 27 kilometres northeast of Jalalabad. In the days following there have been several significant aftershocks. Reports indicate over 2,200 people have been killed and 3,600 injured. About 84,000 people are affected and 6,700 homes destroyed, with Kunar Province suffering the heaviest losses. Entire villages in mountainous districts such as Nurgal and Soki were reduced to rubble. Rescue operations are ongoing, but access remains severely limited due to landslides and blocked roads. The assignment involves applying GIS technologies, and data visualisation methods to enhance the effectiveness of emergency response initiatives and humanitarian assistance in the aftermath of the earthquake. Working closely with multidisciplinary teams, the OVs will utilise spatial data analysis, mapping, and visualisation techniques to inform decision-making, resource allocation, and situational awareness in emergency contexts. Two Online Volunteers will be engaged: one for data processing, one for data visualisation. The OVs will contribute to the work of the DIMA team (Data, Identity, Management and Analysis), which is mainly responsible for conducting thorough data and information management, spatial analyses, producing mapping products, and drafting geospatial reports that underscore key insights for emergency response and humanitarian operations. Additionally, the OVs will support in developing interactive GIS dashboards and decision support tools to enable real-time situational awareness and resource monitoring.
Task DescriptionTwo Online Volunteers (OVs) will be engaged: one for data processing, one for data visualisation. Under the direct supervision of Senior Information Management Officer, the OVs will undertake the following tasks: Data Processing OV - Manage and visualise large-scale geographic datasets to provide clear, actionable insights for decision-making with a focus on the recent earthquake emergency in Afghanistan. - Conduct spatial analysis and assess infrastructure weaknesses and population exposure to earthquake hazards. - Assist the Senior Information Management Officer in the development of needed GIS web applications and dashboards to support the decision-making process in earthquake emergencies (back-end data component). Data Visualisation OV - Produce infographics and thematic maps for operational, reporting and monitoring purposes. - Develop detailed maps of earthquake-prone areas, impacted locations (province, districts and villages), and vulnerability factors, as well as conducting comprehensive risk assessments. - Assist in the development of needed GIS web applications and dashboards to support the decision-making process in the recent earthquake emergency (front-end visualization component).
