CERN Fire and Rescue Service (CFRS) provides around-the-clock emergency services including firefighting, accident response and emergency care and rescue. It is involved in various general safety activities, in particular training, drafting of operational procedures (forward planning, prevention, means of rescue). CFRS also collaborates with the Fire Departments and Emergency Medical Services of France and Switzerland, with whom emergency interventions can be carried out and when possible, exercises are held.

Functions

After the initial ten weeks on-the-job training related to CERN and CFRS specifics with the 2024 CFRS newcomers, you will join the pool of fire officers. As such, you will report directly to the Head of the Fire and Rescue Service for functional duties and to the Operational Leader for operational duties.

As a fire officer, you will then play a dual role - operational and functional - as follows:

Operational Duties

As a CFRS on-duty officer (two to three days every second week, 07:15 am – 07:15 pm and overnight stand-by from home):

Lead and coordinate complex rescue and accident operational response;Coordinate the collaboration between CFRS and its stakeholders both internally and externally;Ensure the readiness for action of CFRS personnel and equipment;Provide operational sections and other safety services with technical expertise with a view to ensure an appropriate response to threats and incidents of all kinds;Process information relating to operational activities and communicate it to the team of officers and the head of service;Check, approve and disseminate intervention reports.

Functional Duties

Define, in collaboration with Fire Safety Engineers, means of fire prevention for CERN's assets compliant with interventions tactic;Contribute to the definition of the objectives of the firefighting teams and ensure that these objectives are achieved;Lead, contribute to or implement various CFRS projects;Prepare, supervise, and take part in official CERN events;Take part in training exercises in accordance with the CFRS training plan and annual training programme;Develop and maintain partnerships with the various stakeholders of the CFRS.

Qualifications

You have the diplomas and/or certificates (Bachelor or equivalent relevant experience) that bring proof of you being educated and trained as a fire officer. These diplomas and certificates are issued by a public body or a private body acting under the delegation of a public service.

Experience:

You currently work, and have demonstrated experience, as a professional fire officer in a public or company fire service, in either an urban or industrial, or any other large and organised fire and rescue service environment. Proven experience in the field of fire prevention is a prerequisite.

Technical competencies:

Incident command and control: bronze command on Operational level. Knowledge of Tactical command (Silver level).Emergency first response: application and monitoring of the emergency response cycle (observe, orient, decide, act, check) as well as firefighting and rescue, first aid, protection of the environment and property.Fire Prevention.Project management.

Behavioural competencies:

Language skills:

Proficiency in English and/or French. The ability to draw up technical texts in one of the two languages. The ability to understand and speak the other language in everyday/emergency situations, or an undertaking to acquire it rapidly would be an advantage. CERN offers language courses to quickly master both French and English.
