1. Background and Objective

As part of the UAE-funded project โ€œReviving the spirit of Mosul by rebuilding its monumental landmarks,โ€ the UNESCO Iraq office plans to establish a museum/interpretation center in the Old City of Mosul. The museum will offer an interactive and visual presentation of the history and heritage of the Old City of Mosul. The Centre aims to communicate the significance and meaning of the Old City, its urban fabric, and its tangible and intangible heritage.

2. Purpose of the Assignment

This assignment is to develop, in close coordination with UNESCO, a draft concept plan including all curational content needed for the exhibition. The consultantโ€™s role is not to design the exhibition but to propose and develop the content to be included in the displays. The draft concept plan will serve as bases for selecting a design company to develop the final design and should, at least, include the following aspects:

โ€ข Historical context, key figures, relevant events and themes, and any other relevant information that aligns with the purpose and objectives defined for the exhibition.
โ€ข Analysis of targeted audiences, the related proposal of exhibition content timeline or themes, layout, technology, and interpretation techniques to be used, as well as accessibility.

3. Duties/Tasks and Expected Output

โ€ข Compile a reliable set of historical/cultural sources available tangible and intangible heritage of the Old City of Mosul, creating a repository of available publications. This should include publications but also visual content such as video footage, pictures, and drawings.

โ€ข Develop a draft Concept Plan for the exhibition together with UNESCO; including:

A. The overall definition of the exhibition's purpose, objectives, and messages.
B. Historical context, key figures, relevant events and themes, and any other relevant information that aligns with the purpose and objectives defined for the exhibition.
C. Analysis of targeted audiences, the related proposal of exhibition content timeline or themes, layout, technology, and interpretation techniques to be used, as well as accessibility.
D. Preliminary feasibility study including Facilities and Resources, Governance and Management, and Marketing and Promotion

โ€ข Follow up and supervise the final design of the exhibition together with UNESCO. Propose and adjust the curational content as needed during the development of the final design and ensure that the curational content is accurately and effectively presented.

โ€ข Ensure the involvement of experts and representatives from the local community in developing the concept design as well as the full involvement and support of the Ministry of Culture.

5. Qualifications

โ€ข A bachelorโ€™s degree in architecture, history, anthropology, humanities, or any related field. A masterโ€™s degree in a relevant field is desirable.

โ€ข At least ten years of experience in historical research, preferably regarding the old city of Mosul.

โ€ข Fluency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of Arabic language is desirable.

โ€ข At least ten years of experience working on projects related to history and architecture, preferably in Iraq and/or the old city of Mosul.
โ€ข Prior experience developing exhibition designs for museums.

6. Supervisory arrangements

The consultant will work under the direct supervision of the Associate Project Officer for the Cultural Development of the project and under the overall supervision of the Senior Project Manager of the โ€œReviving the Spirit of Mosul by rebuilding its monumental landmarksโ€ project.

7. Facilities to be provided by UNESCO (if any)

The consultant will work from Mosul. UNESCO will offer office space in the Al Nouri Complex if needed. The consultant will be expected to travel to Erbil at least twice a month. Individual consultants are expected to make their own travel arrangements and should be provided with a lump sum to cover travel-related expenses.
