Work LocationRemotely Expected durationOne week Duties and ResponsibilitiesBackground: The European Unionโs Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is set to significantly impact international trade by imposing carbon-related costs on imports of certain goods into the EU. As a key trading partner, Egypt must prepare its exporters to adapt to these new regulations. In this context, the workshop aims to explore Egypt's current efforts to monitor CBAM developments and support exporters in reducing potential trade disruptions. An expert will be engaged to present Egyptโs institutional and policy responses, assess challenges, and provide recommendations on enhancing technical and strategic preparedness The regional workshop involves participants from the Ministries of Trade of ESCWA member States in addition to representees of other international organizations and other institutions concerned. The workshop will provide participants further insights on the risks and challenges for Arab exports to the EU. It will also present and discuss preliminary findings on the impacts of the latest proposals on CBAM on North African countries using appropriate techniques. The workshop is organized in partnership with the UNECA, building on the initial assessment made by ECA on the impacts of CBAM on African economies, including Arab African countries. Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant is expected to undertake the following tasks: Participate in the delivery of the workshop with a focus session on Egypt's preparations to CBAM in terms of monitoring and assisting exporters to mitigate impacts on their trade operations with the EU. Qualifications/special skillsA master's degree in applied Economics is required. All candidates must submit a copy of the required educational degree. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. At least 5 years of experience working on climate and trade policy is required. A specific focus on CBAM or similar mechanisms is required. Demonstrated knowledge of Egyptโs trade landscape and climate-related regulations is required. Experience working with government agencies, industry associations, or international development organizations in Egypt or the MENA region is required. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in written and spoken Arabic is required.
