Your responsibilities

As a Mechanical Engineer you will join the Targets, Collimators and Dumps (TCD) Section within the Sources, Targets, and Interactions (STI) group which is responsible for all primary Beam-Intercepting Devices (BIDs) at CERN.
The groups involvement spans the entire life cycle of the devices, from their conceptual design to their production, installation, operation, and decommissioning.

In this role, you will support the group in matters of operational follow-up for Beam Intercepting Devices (BIDs), focusing on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) but also for the entire accelerator complex, including the Proton Synchrontron (PS) and Super Proton Synchrontron (SPS).

Specifically, you will:

Execute Finite Element Analyses (FEA) to predict device operation, liaising with the beam operation as well as the control and mechatronics teams;Take part in the development, prototyping, testing and operation follow-up of the crystal collimator hardware, including the finite element studies and analysis of operation and experimental behaviour of these devices;Explore physics-informed Machine Learning (ML) and other techniques to support your teams in the operation and monitoring of beam intercepting devices;Be involved in quality assurance of the CAE calculations;Be responsible for the development & maintenance of specific finite element scripts and tools, in collaboration with other engineers in the section; Ensure that the documentation such as guidelines, course material, simulation reports and material databases are up-to date and easily accessible by the colleagues as part of the Q&A strategy.

Your profile

Skills and/or knowledge

Technical competencies:

Sound knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts (structural, materials, thermal);Consolidated experience in FEA and engineering calculations.

Soft skills:

Capable of working in diverse, multicultural, multidisciplinary environment.

Advantageous experiences:

Previous experience in beam intercepting devices would be an advantage.

Language skills:

Fluent in English, the ability to work in French would be an advantage.

Eligibility criteria:

You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.You have a professional background in Mechanical Engineering or similar (or a related field) and have either: a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience;or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience.You have never had a CERN fellow or graduate contract before.
