5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Background

NRC has been actively engaged in the Education in Emergencies (EiE) sector in Yemen, with good presence in Al Dhaleโ€™e governorate, where conflict and repeated displacement continue to disrupt childrenโ€™s access to safe and quality education. The ongoing humanitarian crisis has left schools under-resourced, overcrowded, and vulnerable to future shocks. NRCโ€™s education interventions in Al Dhaleโ€™e focus on restoring learning opportunities for crisis-affected children, supporting school-based planning, and promoting inclusive and protective learning environments.

The Education Officer plays a key role in implementing NRCโ€™s education strategy at the field level. This includes supporting school improvement planning, disaster risk reduction (DRR) initiatives, and emergency preparedness in coordination with school staff, communities, and education authorities. This position operates within an established education program and requires strong collaboration with internal teams (such as WASH, Shelter, and Protection) as well as external actors, including local authorities and cluster partners. Roles and responsibilities

As a part of a Education Team, the role shares a collective responsibilityย to coordinate, undertake, monitor and deliver the activities outlined in the projectโ€™s documents as per NRC standards.

The Education Officer in Aldhaleโ€™e will be responsible for leading NRCโ€™s education interventions in the targeted schools. The role focuses on restoring and sustaining access to quality education for displaced and conflict-affected children by improving school environments, supporting school-level planning, and working closely with communities. A key part of the role is to strengthen schoolsโ€™ ability to prepare for and respond to future emergencies through inclusive School Improvement Plans (SIPs) and disaster risk reduction (DRR) activities. The officer will also ensure safe, inclusive, and child-friendly learning spaces in coordination with other NRC teams and education stakeholders.
ย  Generic Responsibilities

Apply NRCโ€™s standard operating procedures, technical tools, and accountability frameworks to all aspects of education programming to maintain quality, consistency, and compliance with organizational standards. Plan and carry out assigned activities in line with the approved work plan, ensuring they meet technical standards, address the needs of affected communities, and are completed within set timelines and budgets. Regularly document field progress, beneficiary numbers, challenges, and successes in line with internal reporting schedules and donor requirements, ensuring information is clear, timely, and based on field evidence. Keep proper records of project activities, including attendance sheets, training reports, meeting minutes, and distribution lists, in line with NRCโ€™s document retention and compliance policies. Identify and communicate opportunities to improve implementation methods, address emerging needs, or adjust approaches to better respond to local contexts and community feedback. Ensure that NRC programming focuses on the most at-risk groups โ€” including displaced children, girls, and children with disabilities โ€” and look for new ways to reach those who may be excluded or underserved. Support colleagues and community members involved in project delivery through coaching, training sessions, and mentoring, contributing to long-term capacity development. Maintain regular communication and strong relationships with education offices, school leadership, community groups, and implementing partners to foster ownership and improve coordination across stakeholders. Compliance and adherence to NRC policies, guidance and procedures,ย (if a function role) and a specific responsibility for the functions policies and procedures.

Lead the rollout of community-based contingency planning and preparedness actions, including emergency simulations, prepositioning of materials, and coordination with education authorities. Establish and maintain feedback and complaints mechanisms that are safe, accessible, and child friendly. Design and deliver back-to-learning campaigns and outreach to promote enrollment and retention. Liaise with relevant stakeholders, including Protection, CCCM, and Education clusters, to ensure coordinated and timely response during emergencies.
