About this position

We are looking for an experienced Economist to join our team in the Country Office of Guatemala. As a Country Economist, you will perform highly analytical tasks, create and coordinate the dissemination of knowledge products and conduct relevant ongoing research.

You will be one of a group of Economists in the CID Country Department (CID). This team is responsible for Belize, Central America, Mexico, Panama, Dominican Republic and Haiti within the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

What you’ll do:

Analyze and monitor Guatemala's macroeconomic performance, gathering knowledge for the Bank, support the identification of risks and opportunities, and prepare documents for the institution's macroeconomic safeguards. Prepare analyses of the main problems at the microeconomic level that inhibit the functioning of certain markets/sectors (labour market, banking sector). Identify research topics for the Bank's Country Strategy and for the design and implementation of the Bank's country program and identify critical areas for the Bank's dialogue with the country and the agenda needed to sustain this dialogue. Coordinate the evaluation, preparation and monitoring of progress and results of the Country Strategy. Articulate and participate in dialogue with counterparts (MEF, Central Bank) on policies and reforms in strategic areas; support dialogue with the private sector and other relevant counterparts. Develop and coordinate a program for the generation, improvement and dissemination of knowledge for the country (both in the macroeconomic and sectoral areas) and participate in economic forums to contribute and capture knowledge about factors that affect the country and maintain external networks to access and expand knowledge. Participate in cross-cutting institutional and regional initiatives and in the generation of the regional knowledge agenda. Ensure the consistency of lending operations and technical cooperation with the country's challenges and priorities and the logic of intervention. Analyze lessons learned on the economic, social and political/institutional area at the close of operations.

What you'll need

Education: Master's or Doctorate in Economics or Public Policy. Experience: Minimum six (6) years of relevant experience in economic research, economic monitoring and analysis of economic information. Experience in public policy issues and development problems in the countries of the region. Macroeconomic knowledge (debt sustainability analysis, current account, etc.). It is desirable that you have experience working in or with the IDB, including knowledge of its policies and procedures, as well as a good command of statistical and econometric software. Languages: Proficiency in English and Spanish, spoken and written, is required.

Requirements

Citizenship: You are a citizen of one of our 48-member countries. We may offer assistance with relocation and visa applications for you and your eligible dependents. Consanguinity: You have no family members (up to the fourth degree of consanguinity and second degree of affinity, including spouse) working at the IDB, IDB Invest, or IDB Lab.

Type of contract and duration

International staff contract, 36 months initially, renewable upon mutual agreement. Location: Guatemala
