Part of ESCWAโ€™s work in this domain includes analytical research, technical assistance, and capacity-building to support Arab countries in strengthening competition policy and market regulation, consumer protection, and national development planning. These initiatives fall under Cluster 6 and include key activities such as market studies related to competition policy, technical work on consumer behavior, the organization of related expert meetings, and support to governments in planning and monitoring development strategies. To support these efforts, the intern will be assigned as an economics research assistant supporting a range of activities under Cluster 6. These include background research, data analysis, and assistance in preparing technical materials related to the topics outlined above. The role will also involve contributing to country-level assessments, sectoral studies, and the assistance in developing policy tools. By supporting these projects, the intern will help advance evidence-based policymaking in areas critical to economic resilience and institutional reform across the region. Duties and Responsibilities: โ€ข Contribute to economic assessments and regional analyses related to competition policy, consumer protection, and development planning. โ€ข Provide assistance in preparing technical material and presentations, briefing notes, and working papers for internal use and external meetings. โ€ข Help gather and process quantitative and qualitative data using Excel or other software tools to support analytical outputs. โ€ข Support the planning and coordination of upcoming meetings, webinars, etc. by preparing background material and assisting with documentation. โ€ข Maintain organized records of research materials, reports, and datasets for easy access and retrieval. โ€ข Conduct background research and compile relevant economic and sectoral data for performing market studies as required. โ€ข Support the work on monitoring and evaluating national development plans (e.g.: the final assessment of Omanโ€™s 10th National Development Plan). โ€ข Perform other assigned tasks and duties as requested by the supervisor in support of ESCWAโ€™s work under Cluster 6. Qualifications/special skillsTo qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: 1. Applicants must: (a) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); or (c) have graduated with a university degree (as defined above); 2. Applicants must: (a) be computer literate in standard software applications. (b) have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the UN Charter; and (c) have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. No previous work experience is required for this job opening. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat; and Arabic is a working language of ESCWA. For this position, fluency in English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of French is desirable.
