Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is under Subprogramme 3: ‘Economic development and integration’ of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA - unescwa.org ). Under the overall supervision of the Director in charge of this subprogramme, the incumbent reports to the Chief of Economic Modeling and Forecasting.Responsibilities
The Economic Affairs Officer will be responsible for carrying out the following:
Economic or sector analysis
• Develops socio-economic databases and qualitative information necessary for specified recurrent or ad hoc assignments.
• Interprets, applies and, as necessary, adapts econometric models to determine trends, patterns and relationships and to analyse the effects of alternative policies and assumptions.
• Researches and drafts specified inputs for technical papers and analytical studies on selected aspects of economic development and macroeconomics.
• Identifies and analyses policy proposals relating to assigned topics.
• Attends international, regional, and national meetings to collect information and to hold discussions with colleagues in other institutions in relative areas.
• Contributes to the production and roll out of the section’s annual flagship publication related to the economic and social developments in the region.
• Assists in the organization and servicing of the section’s expert group meetings, seminars, launching events, etc.
• Prepares presentations, press releases, speeches and other inputs for presentations by senior staff.
• Supports in the development of modeling and quantitative tools including SAM (Social Accounting Matrix) and static and dynamic versions of CGE (Computable General Equilibrium) models, etc.
• Prepares inputs for reports to intergovernmental bodies.
• Follows intergovernmental meetings and prepares summary reports.
• Assists in the organization of panels, round tables etc. on development issues for intergovernmental processes.
• Prepares documentation for technical cooperation programmes and projects.
• Contributes to the preparation of material for the approval of regional, country or sector technical cooperation projects.
• Monitors, backstops, assesses and reports the implementation of technical cooperation programmes and projects.
• Performs other related duties as required, including a variety of administrative tasks necessary for the final delivery of the work unit’s services.
• Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities, both internally and externally.

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in economics or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area.
Experience macroeconomic and SDG Financing is desirable.
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Arabic is also a working language of ESCWA. For the post advertised, fluency in written and spoken English is required. Knowledge of Arabic language is desirable.
