EarthRights\nInternational is a non-governmental, non-profit organization that combines the\npower of law and the power of people in defense of human rights and the\nenvironment, which we define as \"earth rights.\" A key part of who we are\norganizationally is our three-pronged approach to making change: training of\ncommunity and legal activists, strategic legal work in defense of human rights\nand demanding corporate accountability, and campaigns to promote systemic\ngovernmental and corporate policy change. Our work focuses on climate justice\nand accountability, earth rights defenders, and corporate accountability.\n\n

The\nTraining Team implements one of the 3 thematic areas of the strategy of\nEarthRights (training, legal, campaign) by implementing EarthRights School\n(ERS), a variety of training programs and the alumni program. The Training Team\ncollaborates across the organization contributing to the creation and\nimplementation of the training elements in the activities of the other teams\nwhen necessary.\n\n

Established\nin 1999, EarthRights School is a unique, long-term residential program that\nunites a diverse group of individuals from across the Mekong region who return\nto their communities to lead, inspire, and train others. The core focus of the\nprogram is leadership. The program is designed to put campaign and legal tools\ninto the hands of front-line activists and NGOs, and help communities protect\ntheir rights and the environment. The curriculum covers topics such as\nglobalization, human rights, social activism, environmental protection,\ncorporate social responsibility, and sustainable development. Additionally,\nskills-building courses in public speaking, presentation, communication,\nresearch, project cycle management are offered. The alumni program offers a\nwide range of activities to continuously engage and support alumni. It provides\nfurther training opportunities in the of long- and short-term, in-person,\nonline and hybrid courses, online and in-person networking and learning events\non country- and the regional levels, the development of an online engagement\nplatform, maintaining diverse communication channels with alumni, maintaining\nand updating databases of alumni, donors, and resources and implements the\nsmall grants program and supports alumni in accessing funds from diverse\ndonors.\n\n

Position Overview\n\n

The EarthRights\nSchool Trainer & Mentor reports to the Senior Training Manager and works\nclosely with the EarthRights School Coordinator and the members of the Training\nTeam. This role involves contribution to the development of curricula,\nfacilitation of day-to-day school activities, coordinating class content and\nlesson delivery, aligning guest teacher expertise with school needs, and\nsupporting guest teachers. The EarthRights School Trainer & Mentor utilizes\ntheir expertise in instructional design, pedagogy, and adult learning\nmethodologies to deliver interactive, engaging, and thought-provoking content\nthat fosters critical thinking and problem-solving skills. They ensure that\nteaching methods align with EarthRights' values and best education practices.\nThe EarthRights School Trainer & Mentor guides and advises students in\ntheir daily studies, on field research and field learning experiences. This\nposition requires occasional travel in the region and to remote locations\nwithin the region and is based in Chiang Mai.\n\n

Key\nResponsibilities\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Prepare and teach EarthRights School and alumni courses using an\nexperiential education model, including syllabus, lesson sessions, assignments,\nand student workflows.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Participate in curriculum development and support the Senior\nTraining Manager in revising and implementing curricula.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Research for new materials, methods, learning activities and tools.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Support the annual EarthRights School recruitment process,\nincluding candidate ion and interviews.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Plan and implement workflows for students, including giving\nfeedback on homework, writing assignments, readings, and student presentations.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Provides needs-based English language, digital literacy/skills, and\nstudy skills support through written and verbal feedback, outside teaching\nhours.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Coach, mentor, advise, counsel students during their studies,\nfieldwork, professional and personal development, available for students\noutside teaching hours.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Co-facilitates and supports the delivery of different training\ncourses for alumni.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Collaborates with the ERS Coordinator and the Senior Training\nManager in the design and implementation of the internal MEL processes of the\nTraining Team.\n\n

Competencies\nand Qualifications\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Bachelor's degree in a\nrelevant field or at least 5-10 years of active, field-based experience in\nteaching, training, mentoring, or capacity-building roles within human rights\nor environmental rights organizations.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Strong background in\nnon-formal learning approaches and methodologies, inclusive education, adult\neducation and experiential learning.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Proven experience in lesson\nplanning and a deep understanding of creative and impactful learning approaches\nfor diverse adult learners.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Demonstrated knowledge of the\nSoutheast Asia context.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Experience laborating with\ngrassroots community movements, organizations, and international NGOs in the\ndevelopment sector, especially in campaign, advocacy and community organizing\nin the Mekong Region or South-East Asia.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Proven ability to integrate\ngender and social inclusion in development and education programs.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Background in environmental\nand human rights and/or Southeast Asian community work.\n\n

โ—ย ย ย ย ย ย Excellent cross-cultural\ncommunication skills and experience working with diverse groups, especially\nfrom across Southeast Asia.\n\n
