IDH (International Federation for Human Rights) is an international NGO for the defense of human rights. Since 1922, we have been engaged in the defense of all civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
We federate 192 national associations for the defense of human rights active in 117 countries. For us, the transformation of societies is primarily the responsibility of local actors. Our activities aim to strengthen their capacity for action and their influence.
The International Secretariat of FIDH is a human-sized organization (47 employees in Paris and several offices abroad) and composed of a committed international team. Our office is located in a lively and central district of Paris (close to Bastille and Gare de Lyon).
We are seeking to recruit a DIRECTOR OF AFRICA DESK.
General objective of the position : In full collaboration with your network of members on the African continent, and under the responsibility of the Director of Operations and Programs, you lead the teams of the Africa Office to develop and implement the strategies and activities that will contribute to protect and promote human rights on the continent.
Your main responsibilities
Develop the action strategy of the Africa Desk in consultation with the members of the Operations & Programs department and the political teams : development of the multi-year strategy and the annual programming of activities, development of specific action programs intended for donors and ensure their management. You develop the office's advocacy and communication strategy in consultation with the Advocacy and Communication departments.
Lead and strengthen the link with internal and external actors (member organizations, national and international partners of FIDH). You coordinate relations with internal members of the International Bureau, the Executive Board, delegations, decentralized offices concerned with the activity of the Africa Desk and the Presidency when necessary.
Implement the activities of the Desk. You supervise the validation of activities and public documents with your internal contacts. You supervise and implement missions (investigation, judicial observation, solidarity and national advocacy), workshops, denunciation and alert activities, advocacy activities in consultation with the Advocacy Department. You supervise and implement the production / translation / distribution of external FIDH publications, internal documents and communication actions concerning the activity of the Desk. You coordinate the support, by the Desk team, of human rights defenders and partners in the field. You supervise the budgets of the Desk's programs, logistical and administrative management related to the activities.
Ensure the representation and external positioning of the Desk with donors, States, the media and all partners. You make visible, internally and externally, the activities carried out by the ddesk and the results obtained.
Manage and lead the team of 8 people. Provide reporting and contribute to the evaluation of office activities.
Skills and Qualifications
Advanced degree in political science, international relations, human rights or international law. You have at least 8 years of professional experience, regardless of the sector of activity, in any of the above mentioned fields. Your experience has enabled you to develop a very good knowledge of human rights issues, developments and news in Africa. You have a solid documented experience of representation (politics, partners, media), negotiation, advocacy and diplomacy. You have already managed remote multicultural teams, for 5 years. You have good writing and oral expression skills (level C1) in either French or English, with a working knowledge of one of them. Knowledge of Portuguese is appreciated.
You are absolutely familiar with the financing methods of institutional donors, as xell as their rules of contract management and reporting. You have the ability to work well both independently and in a team. You are proactive and know how to meet deadlines. Your experience in security management in degraded contexts is an aset.
Remuneration and conditions
Full-time permanent contract. Management level. Position based in Paris ; the location can be reviewed after the first year. Gross starting salary from € 41 600 (depending on prior experience) paid out over 13 months. 23 days of compensatory time (RTT) per year. FIDH covers 80% of mutual health care plan ; 60% of daily lunch allowance of € 8,40 (distributed in restaurant vouchers) and 50% of the public transportation card.
