Position Description: FEWS NET is dedicated to delivering early warning of hazards, food insecurity, vulnerability, and famine to the US Government, USAID, national governments, and various regional, international, and non-governmental organizations. FEWS NET 8 will continue the critical work that FEWS NET has delivered for over 30 years, emphasizing global coverage and innovation in food security monitoring and assessment. Managed from a headquarters office in Washington D.C., FEWS NET 8 will extend its reach beyond traditional geographical limitations, providing decision support services for over 30 presence countries and global early warning of food security and humanitarian crises.
The Data Scientist & Advanced Analytics Team Coordinator will orchestrate the analysis of complex datasets to drive predictive modeling and insights into food security trends. They will ensure data quality, govern cross-functional data-sharing practices, and leverage analytics to inform project strategy and decision-making.
Responsibilities:
* Design and manage large-scale databases relevant to food security analytics, ensuring data integrity and accessibility.
* Utilize advanced analytics and machine learning techniques to develop predictive models for identifying regions at risk of food insecurity and famine.
* Coordinate interdepartmental data sharing, ensuring cohesive data collection strategies across different project facets.
* Lead the analysis of complex data sets to provide insights on food production, distribution patterns, and consumption trends.
* Develop and implement data governance frameworks, including data privacy and security protocols.
* Collaborate with field teams to validate models and findings with on-the-ground data.
* Translate complex data findings into actionable recommendations for technical and non-technical stakeholders.
* Provide training and capacity building for project staff in data management and analysis tools and best practices.
* Stay abreast of the latest developments in data science and bring innovative data solutions to the project.
* Present findings to key stakeholders through comprehensive reports and visualizations.
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
* Minimum graduate degree in a relevant field such as data science or computer science.
* Minimum of 5 years of experience in data science, data coordination, and analysis related to the humanitarian relief or international development fields.
* Proven track record developing data and analysis processes and systems linked to effective decision support functions.
* Proven experience in leadership roles and cross-functional team training in data science concepts.
* Understanding of USAID or USG data policies and procedures strongly preferred.
* Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
* Experience working in a multicultural and diverse environment.
* Fluency in English; proficiency in additional languages such as French or Spanish is advantageous.
* Current U.S. work authorization is required at the time of application.
