Setting and ReportingThe United Nations Department of Safety and Security (UNDSS) is responsible for providing leadership, operational support, and oversight of the United Nations security management system (UNSMS) globally. This position is located in the Operational Resilience Service (ORS) within the Office of the Under-Secretary-General for Safety and Security, UNDSS. ORS provides specialist support to UNDSSโ€™s field operations enhancing the Departmentโ€™s ability to absorb and recover from shocks, stresses, and challenges while maintaining essential functions during any occurrence. ORS pursues a proactive and data-led approach to develop and implement innovative ideas, methodologies, and solutions to an ever-evolving global security landscape. The Data Scientist will report to the Programme Officer for Strategic Innovation under the supervision of the Senior Programme Officer within ORS. In this role, you will help UNDSSโ€™s field operations become more effective, efficient, and adaptable, thus contributing directly or indirectly to peace and security, human rights, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). For more information on the Department, and how we make an impact on the world in enabling the achievement of SDGs, visit: https://www.un.org/undss/ ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Data Scientist will be responsible for the following duties: โ€ข Work with stakeholders throughout the organization to identify opportunities for leveraging data from core business processes, including security risk management (SRM) and security plans, as well as internal and external data sources strengthening data-driven decision making in field operations. โ€ข Mine and analyze data from structured and unstructured sources, including big data, to optimize and improve internal processes, programmes, and business strategies, through descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive modeling techniques. โ€ข Assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new and existing data sources, such as the Security and Safety Incident Recording System (SSIRS), to propose innovative, client-focused solutions in line with UNDSS Digital Transformation Strategy and the UN Secretary-Generalโ€™s โ€œData Strategy for Action by Everyone, Everywhereโ€. โ€ข Develop custom data models and algorithms for a Country Categorization System aggregating relevant indicators and metrics to reflect field operational readiness, resource allocation and crisis risk. โ€ข Design and manage data collection systems, databases, and data analytics platforms to support decision making in field operations, strategic planning, and real-time response capabilities. โ€ข Coordinate with cross-functional teams to implement models and outcomes translating complex data into actionable insights for senior managers in the field and headquarters. โ€ข Develop processes to monitor and evaluate the performance and accuracy of data models and tools. โ€ข Performs other duties as assigned. Experience with data science and machine learning tools, statistical packages or similar programming languages, including Python, R, SAS, STATA, SPSS, Jupyter Notebook, Google Colab, Matlab, Knime, or related is required. Experience with cloud technologies and computing services, such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, IBM cloud or similar is desirable. Experience within the UN system or related international organization is desirable. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
