Work LocationHQ, Geneva, Switzerland or Home-Based Expected duration3 months, start asap Duties and ResponsibilitiesBACKGROUND: The International Trade Centre (ITC), a United Nations-World Trade Organization joint agency, assists developing and transition countries to take advantage of expanding trade opportunities in an increasingly complex global environment. ITC promotes sustainable and inclusive development goals through trade. The Trade and Market Intelligence section (TMI) has developed and is continuously evolving a set of portals that provide data on trade flows, customs duties and market access in a user-friendly and highly flexible way to thousands of users in the developing world. TMI is currently implementing the African Trade Observatory (ATO, https://ato.africa/en/), a collaboration with the African Union Commission (AUC) applied to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). This project notably aims at providing real-time trade related indicators to African policymakers. In this context, TMI is looking for an intern to support the implementation of the ATO project, with a special focus on the trade in goods data (data collection, data processing, data quality, indicators). DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES Under the overall guidance and the direct supervision of the Programme Officer, the selected intern will provide support on: • The trade in goods data component (data collection, data processing, data quality, indicators). Qualifications/special skillsEDUCATION Applicants to the internship shall, at the time of application, meet one of the following requirements: a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or b) Have graduated with a university degree (as defined in a above) and, if selected, shall commence the internship within one year of graduation. Relevant field of studies: Economics or Data Science or Statistics or Data Engineering. SKILLS Very good knowledge of one of the following two statistical softwares: Python or R. Interest in development economics and international trade. Experience in processing customs transaction data is an asset. LanguagesVery good knowledge of English.
