Our CrisisInSight team plays a key role in helping the global humanitarian community stay informed about crises around the world.ย CrisisInSight is an ACAPS analysis portfolio which monitors and captures developments in various humanitarian crises and combines tools for understanding these crises by assessing the level of severity and providing analysis on humanitarian access, trends, and risks.ย ย ย 

What we doย 

We assess the severity of humanitarian crises and needs to support evidence-based decision-making.ย  We support strategic planning and early action by helping understand how crises may evolve, where new crises may emerge and a spike in humanitarian needs may occur.ย  We support informed decision-making in complex environments and anticipate risks in climate vulnerable and fragile contexts.ย  We provide regular snapshots of the most challenging contexts for humanitarian access globally.ย  We provide humanitarian needs analysis for underreported crises.ย  We produce in-depth analyses on complex protracted crises where ACAPS has no regional or country team to ensure global coverage.ย 

Purpose of the position

The Data Collector supports ACAPS analysis by contributing to the production of ACAPS data products through secondary data review and structured data collection. This role ensures the availability of timely, relevant, and high-quality data to inform humanitarian decision-making.

Note: This position may involve working across thematic areas on a rotational basis and / or depending on organizational need, such as Social Impact (SI), Humanitarian Access, Protection, and others. Additionally, it requires working with colleagues distributed across various locations and time zones, experience working and collaborating with a remote team is highly desirable.

In ACAPS, we provide an office space for team members to gather, share ideas, and get to know one another. Many of us also work from home or other โ€˜out of the officeโ€™ locations, splitting our time between home office and ACAPS office. Specific responsibilitiesย 

Monitor Developments: Conduct monitoring of information on global political, economic, social, and humanitarian developments related to humanitarian crises and contexts in the assigned countries of responsibility. Data Collection and Analysis: Gather and analyze quantitative and qualitative data to feed into the INFORM Severity Index, the ACAPS Global Humanitarian Datasets (Humanitarian access events, information landscape, protection Risk monitoring, seasonal calendar), and other analysis data products where appropriate. Apply Methodologies and Best Practices: Ensure data collection adheres to the guidelines of ACAPS core products. Report Preparation: Prepare and submit regular reports on data collection activities, including identified trends and potential areas of concern. Collaboration: Collaborate with other team members to share information, insights, and best practices to enhance overall data collection efforts. Actively participating in internal meetings, identifying and discussing contextual developments related to their areas of work. Support Tasks: Support other tasks assigned by the line manager (e.g., note-taking, providing training, and other duties as needed).

Requirements and qualifications

Formal education and backgroundย ย 

Completed relevant university degree or currently enrolled in a programme, preferably in humanitarian action, social sciences, international relations, international development or related fields.ย 

Requirements

Skilled in Excel; Familiarity with Airtable and power BI is an asset;ย  Experience with open-source research and leveraging AI tools; Experience in Data Collection, Data Analysis, Secondary Data Review, and Desk Review; Strong attention to detail and ability to receive and implement feedback;ย  Ability to effectively work within a multi-cultural environment; Ability to deliver against targets and meeting deadlines within a short timeframe;ย  Ability to work in large remote team;ย  Organized and detail-oriented, with proven ability to manage time effectively; Fluency in English with excellent written and spoken communication abilities;ย  Fluency in a second language: preferably Arabic or French; Spanish is also beneficial; Any additional language is considered an asset;ย  Access to a reliable internet connection.
