Work LocationPanama City Expected duration3 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The Latin America and the Caribbean Office located in Panama City works closely with the 33 countries of the region - including 16 small island developing States, with a population of about 650 million people. The office works to serve the needs of the region and its activities are integrated into the work programs approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly of UN Environment (UNEA). The UN Reform of the United Nations makes it mandatory for all agencies to work together under the coordination of the UN Resident Coordination and the Development Coordination office. The Regional Development Coordination (RDC) function in LAC has the task to support UNEPs engagement with the entire UN System in the region. The overall objective of the Regional Development Coordination Unit is to support the UNEP UNCT Focal Points to produce the new UNEP Country Programmes. There are several countries of the region for which support is required to map UNEPs existing portfolio to the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) in a coherent manner, including Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEA) portfolios. One (1) intern is sought for a three-month internship period. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. The Intern will work five days per week (35-40 hours), from 9am-5pm, under the supervision of the Regional Development Coordinator in the Latin America and the Caribbean Office. Under the direct supervision of the Regional Development Coordinator of the Latin America and the Caribbean Office, the intern will be supporting the collection of information on Multilateral Environmental Agreements in Ecuador and Gender and Climate Change studies. The main activities to be carried out within the framework of this internship are: 1. General support for the management of project data in coordination with the regional monitoring and reporting officer. 2. Mapping status of MEAS commitments and planned actions for Ecuador using as main data sources InforMEAS website and national MEAs focal points. The specific MEAs to be analyzed will be discussed with supervisor. 3. Produce a MEA chapter for the UNEP Country Engagement Plan or the CCA of ECUADOR 4. Conduct secondary data research to support the identification of linkages between Climate Change and gender impacts. 5. Support the preparation of communications pieces, technical briefing notes, news pieces, draft reports and publications, as necessary. The main outputs/products for this internship are listed below. a) Draft MEA chapter for the UNEP Country Engagement Plan. b) Produce a chapter for mapping of gender and environment /climate change links or initiatives for Ecuador c) Support provided to production of Country Briefing Notes as needed for selected countries. d) General support to maintaining UNINFO data for selected countries under review. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelorโ€™s level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree d. Be computer literate in standard software applications. e. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; f. Have demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views. g. Final year undergraduate or masterโ€™s degree student in Environmental Sciences, Economics, International Relations/ Development, Social Sciences, Law, Business Administration and/or related field. OTHER SKILLS: โ€ข Excellent research and analytical skills, data management, notably in either environmental information, environmental economics, or use of statistical analysis. โ€ข Demonstrable experience in research products, such as a mastersโ€™ level thesis or dissertations in relevant topics (providing examples recommended); โ€ข Advanced skills in use of MS Office (Word, Excel) and general computer literacy. โ€ข Demonstrable organisation skills and ability to manage a diverse range of tasks and projects at the same time. LanguagesEnglish and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English and Spanish are required, since work will require research and communication, including reading and interviews, in both languages.
