he International Organization for Migration (IOM) is an intergovernmental organization that aims to advance understanding of migration issues, encourage social and economic development through its programmes, uphold the human dignity and well-being of migrants to deliver the promise of migration towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM).ย
To achieve these global goals and in line with the vision of the government of Ghana for migration management, the IOM is implementing the project โAย Ghanaian-European Safe and Prosperous Peopleโs Mobility Project on Migration Governance (ATUU Project)'.ย
The actions proposed along three key outputs will contribute to improving migration governance in Ghana. This will be achieved by establishing policy dialogue and coordination mechanisms on migration with a whole-of-government approach, by improving the quality of data and information sharing on migration in Ghana, and by enhancing the capacity of the stakeholders to provide protection and social assistance to vulnerable migrants at the national and local level.ย
Building on the training for journalists that IOM Ghana developed in 2018, the ATUU project aims to train journalists and media actors (e.g. video makers) with practical tools empowering them to report/portray migration accurately and objectively and using innovative and solutions-oriented angles with respect for the dignity of migrants.
Tasks to be performed under this contract As part of the consultancy, the first task involves updating and developing the training manual on reporting on migration. This process will include extensive consultation and cooperation with relevant institutions and authorities in the journalism sector to ensure the manual is comprehensive and up-to-date with journalism standards. The aim is to incorporate best practices and guidelines from leading organizations in migration reporting, ensuring that journalists are equipped with the most current and effective tools for their work. The second task focuses on developing and supporting the implementation of one training session designed to strengthen journalists' capacities in reporting on migration. The training will be conducted in a Trainer of Trainers (ToT) modality, which is intended to foster sustainable capacity building. The development of the training program will involve collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association, the Ghana Journalist Association, Civil Society Organizations including Media Response, key ย ย journalism institutes, media houses, and migration experts. Additionally, cooperation with relevant institutions and authorities will be facilitated to enhance the effectiveness and reach of the training, ensuring that journalists receive the support they need to excel in their reporting on migration. ย Performance indicators for the evaluation of resultsUpdate/ development of one training manual on reporting on migration; Development of a Trainer of Trainers (ToT) module for journalists and other relevant media stakeholders to train on reporting on migration;ย Develop and support the implementation of one training to strengthen journalists capacities on reporting on migration (the training will be conducted in a Trainer of Trainers (ToT) modality). Education A university degree in Journalism, Communication Sciences, International Studies, International Relations, Sociology, Anthropology, Education.ย Experience A minimum of five years of experience in migration reporting, international affairs journalism and capacity building, or both within the West and Central Africa region.ย Experiences in working with Ghanaian higher education institutions and media actors.ย ย Skills Ability to conduct research, interpret information, identify and analyze problems, and propose solutions. Strong communication and negotiation capacities. Ability to conduct capacity building trainings. Languages Fluency in English and any local language is preferred.ย IOMโs official languages are English, French and Spanish.
