5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

IFPRI is seeking a consultant/individual to support an analysis of gender research in the Feed-the-Future Innovation Labs activity as part of the Gender, Climate Change and Nutrition Integration Initiative (GCAN) project.

The Feed the Future Innovation Labs (ILs) have developed various approaches to enhance womenโ€™s economic security in agri-food systems (AFS). These include, engaging women in agri-food supply chains, building womenโ€™s climate resilience capacities, and facilitating adoption of agricultural technologies and practices that women prefer. Approaches to increase womenโ€™s active engagement in the innovation design cycle and the diffusion of technologies are also being explored. While there is a lot of ongoing work across ILs, these efforts have not been well documented and mapped to an overall strategy for womenโ€™s economic empowerment in AFS. The Gender, Climate Change, and Nutrition Integration Initiative (GCAN) seeks to engage directors and gender focal points in the ILs and other key stakeholders to document, categorize, and highlight efforts to integrate gender. Innovations and approaches will be categorized by their type and according to the stage of innovation and readiness for scaling. (One example would be to adopt the CGIAR approach to categorizing innovations by stage and type. Stage: 1) Research/proof of concept, 2) Piloting, 3) Available for use, 4) Taken up by โ€œnext usersโ€ and Type: 1) Methods and tools, 2) Production systems, 3) Genetic 4) Social science, and 5) Biophysical research). The mapping and categorizing exercise will be done through a consultative process with the ILs. Activities include a review of publications on gender-related research findings emerging from the ILs, interviews with directors and/or gender leads in the ILs and other key stakeholders, a convening workshop that brings ILs and their partners together, and engagement with the gender community of practice (Affinity Group led by Penn State). Stakeholders would also be asked to describe any issues and challenges with integrating gender and opportunities for improvement. The results of this process will be documented in a final report to the USAID Bureau for Resilience and Food Security.

The consultant/individual will support this activity and would engage in the following activities:

Collect and review publications and other documents related to gender research findings emerging from the Innovation Labs Interview IL directors, gender leads, and other researchers engaged in gender-related research under the ILs to better understand the research findings Develop a working paper in collaboration with the IFPRI GCAN team that summarizes the body of research related to gender under the Innovation Labs Participate in the convening of IL directors and gender leads
