For every child, care Empowerment of children and young people is one of UNICEFโ€™s key cross-cutting priorities in Turkmenistan in its 2021-2025 country programme. As climate change makes crises more common and recovering from them becomes harder the actions must begin with knowledge and educating the young generation to adapt to the immediate challenges of climate change and to understand the active role to play. Education and youth engagement are recognized by the country as essential components and a catalyst for responding to global climate change challenges and disaster risk reduction. UNICEF and Government partners will continue its efforts to expand climate change topics to the higher education institutions and strengthen youth engagement to play a leading role in climate action for a just transition to a more sustainable future. To achieve its goal, UNICEF in Turkmenistan is looking to engage an intern to support the Climate Change and youth engagement teams in delivering results for children and young people. How can you make a difference?ย  The Climate Change and Youth Engagement Intern will work to support the implementation of the Plan as well as the new joint Green School Programme of the Ministry of Education and UNICEF. Together with partners, the Intern will support young people to develop ideas and solutions to respond to modern day challenges in their communities and increase their participation and advocacy capacity. ย  The assignment will include: Under the supervision of the Climate Change, DRR and Emergency Preparedness Officer, the intern will support the implementation of the following initiatives: โ€ข Assist in the establishment of a Youth National Platform on Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and UNICEF and in partnership with Development Partners Climate Group. Facilitate the operationalization of the Youth National Platform, defining its role, inclusive membership, program of work, and regular engagement. โ€ข Support UNICEF and partners to strengthen capacity and coach the Youth National Platform on Climate Activism, develop youth-engagement applications, and create bridges for meaningful participation in policy discussions, advocacy and awareness raising on Climate Change topics at local, national and regional levels. โ€ข Assist the team efforts to integrate Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction topics in the higher education curriculum of the Pedagogical Institute ensuring the teaching programme and skills correspond to the global needs and climate challenges. โ€ข Assist in the implementation of UNICEF initiatives for developing the Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction curriculum and the methodological manuals, and general support to the supervisor for capacity development on Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability of the teaching staff at the Pedagogical Institute ensuring future teachers in Turkmenistan are equipped with knowledge and skills to introduce these topics in the classroom teaching-learning process. โ€ข Provide assistance and implementation support to other initiatives implemented by UNICEF in collaboration with Government and development partners on climate change and youth engagement. โ€ข Join internal programme conversations (webinars, thematic working groups) and staff meetings. โ€ข Join relevant external meetings, conferences and events within Turkmenistan.

To qualify as an advocate for every child you will have

Applicants must be above 18 years old. โ€ข Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree programme or have graduated within the past two years, in such disciplines as social sciences, economics, environment studies, international cooperation and management. โ€ข Fluency in English. Russian or Turkmen is required. โ€ข Familiarity with UNICEF mandate. Knowledge or exposure to UNICEF/UN work as young participant in activities, or in volunteer capacity will be an advantage. โ€ข Prior experience with youth engagement and/or climate change will be an advantage. โ€ข Understanding of SDGs and Turkmenistan development context. โ€ข Familiarity with technology, mass-media and social media engagement, and youth networking. โ€ข Excellent communication and written skills.
