Mission and objectivesThe World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. As the international community has committed to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition by 2030, one in nine people worldwide still do not have enough to eat. Food and food-related assistance lie at the heart of the struggle to break the cycle of hunger and poverty. In 2020, WFP assisted 115.5 million people โ the largest number since 2012 โ in 84 countries. For its efforts to combat hunger, for its contribution to bettering conditions for peace in conflict-affected areas and for acting as a driving force in efforts to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict, WFP was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2020. WFPโs efforts focus on emergency assistance, relief and rehabilitation, development aid and special operations. Two-thirds of our work is in conflict-affected countries where people are three times more likely to be undernourished than those living in countries without conflict. In emergencies, WFP is often first on the scene, providing food assistance to the victims of war, civil conflict, drought, floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, crop failures and natural disasters. When the emergency subsides, WFP helps communities rebuild shattered lives and livelihoods. We also work to strengthen the resilience of people and communities affected by protracted crises by applying a development lens in our humanitarian response. WFP development projects focus on nutrition, especially for mothers and children, addressing malnutrition from the earliest stages through programmes targeting the first 1,000 days from conception to a childโs second birthday, and later through school meals.
ContextThe World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading Humanitarian Organization fighting hunger and changing lives worldwide, delivering food assistance in emergencies, and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. In Egypt, WFP is committed to supporting the Governmentโs priorities towards the achievement of the SDGs. WFPโs current five-year Country Strategic Plan (CSP) is designed in a way to fully support Egyptโs vision 2030 and ensure food and nutrition security for all Egyptians, as enshrined in both the Constitution and the countryโs commitment to the Global Sustainable Development Agenda. The CSP focuses on five interrelated thematic areas: โข Support the refugees and migrants through food assistance and resilience building โข Improve the nutritional status of Egyptians with a focus on Pregnant and Breastfeeding Women and infants under two years of age โข Support and complement the Governmentโs social protection programs โข Support resilience of vulnerable smallholder farmers and Bedouin communities in Up-per Egypt and frontier Governorates; and โข Provide capacity strengthening to the Government and support South-South cooperation between Egypt and neighbouring countries. As part of WFP Egypt CSP for 2023-2028, WFP is implementing itโs humanitarian response to refugees as well as resilience building activities to refugees and host community members. Through its \"One Refugee Policy\" WFP targets vulnerable refugees irrespective of nationality with cash-based transfers to ensure they can meet their essential food needs throughout the year. WFPโs approach to food security is two-pronged; it first ensures access to basic food needs for vulnerable populations through immediate support, and secondly, it addresses long-term resilience building for future self-reliance. WFP Egypt works in close collaboration with the Egyptian government, development partners, and the private sector to address food security and nutrition challenges. The Partnerships Unit plays a critical role in fostering and strengthening these relationships, mobilizing resources, and expanding the reach and impact of WFP's programmes.
