Org. Setting and Reporting

This post is found within the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (DPPA) at Headquarters (New York). Under the overall supervision of the Chief of the Security Council Secretariat Branch of the Security Council Affairs Division, the incumbent reports directly to a Senior Political Affairs Officer. Responsibilities

Within delegated authority, the Associate Political Affairs Officer will be responsible for the following duties:
- Assist in the provision of substantive support to the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies, by analysing information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press; maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues on the agenda of the Security Council;
- Assists Senior Political Affairs Officer with briefing notes, background papers and talking points.
- Prepares summaries of meetings of the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies and drafts a variety of correspondence, and sections of reports.
- Monitors political, socio-economic, and other politically relevant developments in assigned area.
- Provides input into political, humanitarian and economic efforts and programmes.
- Creates databases that track project progress and provides other information relevant to the Security Council and its subsidiary bodies.
- Performs other related duties as required Competencies

A first-level university degree in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related field.

Work Experience

No experience is required for candidates who have passed the United Nations Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP), the United Nations Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the G to P Examination (G to P).

Experience in providing substantive support to an intergovernmental body is desirable. Languages

United Nations Considerations

According to article 101, paragraph 3, of the Charter of the United Nations, the paramount consideration in the employment of the staff is the necessity of securing the highest standards of efficiency, competence, and integrity. Candidates will not be considered for employment with the United Nations if they have committed violations of international human rights law, violations of international humanitarian law, sexual exploitation, sexual abuse, or sexual harassment, or if there are reasonable grounds to believe that they have been involved in the commission of any of these acts.
