5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesUNICEF works in some of the worldโ€™s toughest places, to reach the worldโ€™s most disadvantaged children. To save their lives. To defend their rights. To help them fulfill their potential. Across 190 countries and territories, we work for every child, everywhere, every day, to build a better world for everyone. And we never give up.

Contextโ€œData saves lives. Data change lives.โ€ Effective use of data is a major catalyst in making faster progress on the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), powering the work of governments and all partners to better fulfil the rights of the 2.4 billion children in the world. The Division of Data, Analytics, Planning and Monitoring (DAPM) was established in 2019 to drive decision making and organizational learning, improve effectiveness and achievement of results of UNICEF and its partners to realize the rights and improve the life of every child. DAPM promotes the use of data and monitoring to achieve transformative impact on the lives of children. The Data Governance Fit for Children Programme is an important initiative in DAPM that aims to foster a culture of responsible data practices across industries, sectors, contexts and generations. By taking a principles-driven approach, DG4C translates the needs and interests of children and youth into actionable, child rights-centered outcomes. The DG4C framework is designed to support governments, tech companies, civil society organizations and others in placing young peopleโ€™s best interests at the heart of their data and technology initiatives. A key component of the DG4C programme is the Responsible Data for Children (RD4C) initiative, a joint endeavour between UNICEFโ€™s DG4C Programme and The GovLab at New York University. It seeks to highlight and support best practice in our work; identify challenges and develop practical tools to assist practitioners in evaluating and addressing them; and encourage a broader discussion on actionable principles, insights, and approaches for responsible data management. The work is intended to address practical considerations across the data lifecycle, including routine data collection and one-off data collections; and compliments work on related topics being addressed by the development community such as guidance on specific data systems and technologies, technical standardization, and digital engagement strategies.
