5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesFor two decades, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has been helping make the world safer from drugs, organized crime, corruption and terrorism. We are committed to achieving health, security and justice for all by tackling these threats and promoting peace and sustainable well-being as deterrents to them. Because the scale of these problems is often too great for states to confront alone, UNODC offers practical assistance and encourages transnational approaches to action. We do this in all regions of the world through our global programmes and network of field offices. The Office is committed to supporting Member States in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at its core. The 2030 Agenda clearly recognizes that the rule of law and fair, effective and humane justice systems, as well as health-oriented responses to drug use, are both enablers for and part of sustainable development.

ContextThe Global Maritime Crime Programme (GMCP) of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC GMCP) is mandated to improve the capabilities of the Member Statesโ€™ entire criminal justice systems to prevent, interdict, investigate and prosecute maritime crime, through a sound rule of law framework and effective international cooperation. The entire criminal justice chain encompasses prevention, deterrence, detection/interdiction, investigation, prosecution, adjudication, detention, and regional cooperation. As part of its capacity-building efforts, UNODC GMCP developed Maritime Crime: A Manual for Criminal Justice Practitioners (3rd ed.), which serves as both a training and reference tool for law enforcement and legal professionals working on maritime crime cases. The manual is designed to enhance the technical knowledge and practical skills of practitioners, while considering the national legal frameworks of individual Member States. Similarly, the Nelson Mandela Rules online course has been translated to enable capacity building of the Correctional Officers of Sri Lanka. To ensure the manual and the online courses is accessible to local criminal justice actors in Sri Lanka, the content has been translated from English into Tamil. In the next phase, UNODC GMCP seeks professional proofreading services to ensure the translated versions are linguistically accurate, clear, and consistent with the original English text. This proofreading process is essential to uphold the quality and usability of the manual, ensuring it effectively contributes to strengthening the national and regional response to maritime crime.
