Mission and objectivesThe United Nations World Food Programme is the world's largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger worldwide. The mission of WFP is to help the world achieve Zero Hunger (SDG 2) in our lifetimes. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no child goes to bed hungry and that the poorest and most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need. WFP has been present in Sri Lanka since 1968 and provided assistance to the country in emergency response and protracted recovery interventions in the aftermath of man-made disasters such as the 27-year conflict and recurrent natural disasters (droughts and floods/landslides). Following the end of nearly three decades of armed conflict in 2009, Sri Lanka attained lower-middle-income-country status in January 2010, and then was elevated to upper-middle-income status in 2019. Exactly one year after (2020), the World Bank has reclassified again the country in the low-income category. Despite social-economic progresses, scope remains for progress in strengthening food security and nutrition given Sri Lanka鈥檚 continued alarming status on nutrition, especially wasting levels, realizing gender equality and eliminating geographic and socio-economic disparities.
ContextSince, 2022 WFP has been implementing a Country Strategic Plan, which is formulated around the achievement of four strategic outcomes designed covering the areas of emergency response, nutrition & school-based programme, resilience building and capacity strengthening. In the four strategic outcomes, WFP engages in SBC in different formats and through a variety of activities. There is a need to integrate SBC into the program, led by evidence, analysis, and use of evidence-based SBC theory and approaches. WFP will continue to advocate, mobilize and communicate to promote food and nutrition security through Social behaviour Change (SBC) interventions integrated with programs such as the National School Meal Program, Maternal child health and nutrition programs, Home grown school feeding program, Rice fortification, social protection, resilience building, Scaling Up Nutrition Business Network activities, gender, Climate change adaptation etc. It includes policy-level engagement, mobilization for change and communication for behaviour change contributing to the improvement of the nutrition situation in the country. CO engages in SBC programs and activities with various important targeted stakeholders however, an internal review and priority indicates the need for an overarching SBC strategy.
