Shelter and Settlements​ Intern

  The Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities. Interns must be between 20 and 36 years old and should have less than two years of relevant working experience. 
  In general, the Internship Programme aims at attracting talented students and graduates who:
  a) have a specific interest in, or whose studies have covered, areas relevant to IOM programmes and activities; b) are holding a scholarship for internship placements in international organizations and/or for whom internship is required to complete their studies; or c) are sponsored by governmental/non governmental institutions and/or academia to work in specific areas relevant to both IOM and the sponsor. d) are either enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or have graduated in the last 12 months. e) are between 20 and 36 years of age.
  Background Information

​​​​​​The IOM Shelter and Settlements (S&S) Unit, under the Department of Humanitarian Response and Recovery, is responsible for supporting IOM’s S&S programming around the world. IOM is one of the largest actors in this sector, implementing shelter and settlements programming in 84 countries globally and leading several inter-agency coordination mechanisms at the global, national, and local levels, and driving positive change for shelter actors.  

​The global IOM S&S unit provides capacity building for country and regional levels. Part of this capacity building includes for prepositioned materials such as essential household and shelter items. One project related to this is the ECHO ReliefEU Stockpiles project, where IOM prepositions relief items on behalf of ECHO in Nairobi and Barbados. The intern will support this project to enhance ECHO’s capacities for responding to emergencies in the African and Caribbean regions. ​​​​​ 

Supervision

• The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Shelter and Settlements Officer and in coordination with the Common Pipeline Coordinator and the Nairobi and Barbados office teams.  Learning Objectives
  • ​​​Support the implementation of the ECHO Stockpiles project with specific focus on supporting the establishment of the Barbados Hub but also supporting improving operations for the Nairobi Hub. 
    • ​Conduct various tasks such as developing communications materials including graphical production, supporting project monitoring and documentation, administration support, and other tasks as requested by the supervisor. 
      • ​Assist with documenting lessons learned relating to procurements and movements of goods from the prepositioning hubs.  
        • ​Conduct data analysis on previous procurements and movements of goods to identify operational improvements and for reporting purposes.  
          • ​Assist with coordinating with the Nairobi and Barbados teams including participating in regular meetings.  
            • ​Assist with planning trainings and other in-person events as required. 
              • ​Support the wider Shelter & Settlements Unit with other related activities. 
                • ​Perform such duties as may be assigned. ​​  Training Components and Learning Elements

                  ​​The Intern will gain: 

                  • ​Experience in working in an international multicultural environment, within the United Nations system:  
                    • ​Experience in organization, management, and international cooperation activities. 
                      • ​Better understanding of IOM’s work, as an inter-governmental organization in the field of Migration, in particular in the Shelter and Settlements Sector.  
                        • ​Better understanding of the partners engaged in S&S activities globally.  
                          • ​The Intern can also access online training courses at the disposal of all IOM staff. 
                            • ​The Intern will have the possibility to interact with IOM staff within Headquarters and IOM Missions.​  Education
                              • ​​University degree in one of the following disciplines: built environment professions (architecture, engineering, urban planning, etc.), social sciences, development or humanitarian action, international relations, or other relevant subjects is required. ​    Experience
                                • ​​Strong and demonstrable interest in shelter and settlements in humanitarian response and recovery.   
                                  • ​Experience of supply chain operations (logistics, procurement) is an asset, particularly in a humanitarian context. 
                                    • ​Experience in the development or management of knowledge management systems/resources, including communities of practice, knowledge hubs, filing systems, Sharepoint sites, etc. is an asset.  
                                      • ​Experience in developing communications products using graphical design softwares.​    Skills
                                        • ​​Data analysis skills are an asset. 
                                          • ​Graphical design skills, including relevant softwares ((for example, Adobe Creative Suite), or potentially web-based presentation skills is an asset 
                                            • ​Results focused, efficiency, flexibility; ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team. 
                                              • ​Excellent organizational and planning skills, including familiarity with Outlook Calendar, gantt charts, and other planning and coordination tools. 
                                                • ​Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and familiarity with Sharepoint, Teams, MS Lists. 
                                                  • ​Working knowledge of statistical packages, graphic and web design software is an advantage.  
                                                    • ​Excellent communication skills in English (oral and written); good knowledge of oral and written French preferred; knowledge of other languages (e.g. Spanish, Arabic) is an asset.  ​    Languages  
                                                      • Proficiency in English (oral and written) required. 

                                                        Desirable 

                                                        • Proficiency in Arabic, French, and/or Spanish is an advantage.  IOM’s official languages are English, French and Spanish.                                     • Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by his/her university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.
                                  • IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the assignment. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
