Scientist, Governance, Equity and Wellbeing
Overview This Scientist will coordinate research and engagement at different levels and geographical scales (including global comparative research) related to social inclusion, environmental justice, gender equity, and land and resource rights, with an emphasis on work with Indigenous Peoples, local communities, Afro-descendent people. He or she will lead work and capacity strengthening at CIFOR-ICRAF on rights-based approaches and contribute to theory and practice on participation, power and accountability, as well as multi- and trans-disciplinary, intercultural and traditional science approaches. She/He will also participate to building bridges with other scientific disciplines in CIFOR-ICRAF, in the context of the work of the Peru and Latam teams. This Scientist will work under the Governance, Equity and Wellbeing team, in close coordination with the Peru/ Latin America team, directly supervised by the GEW team leader.
Duties and responsibilities
Coordinate research for local and national impact
1. Lead research and action teams within a portfolio of projects and deliver on research and impact.
2. Manage projects for delivery and impact (including workplans delivery and budgetary execution).
3. Work analytically across all projects to define engagement and other strategies for impact
4. Produce output for targeted audiences.
5. Share tools, train staff, partners and others to strengthen capacities for impact.
6. Represent CIFOR-ICRAF at subnational and national workshops and events and assure country-level communications and dissemination.
7. Cultivate strong in-country partnerships with researchers, civil society and grassroots organizations, government agencies, private companies, and funding partners.
Produce high quality science
1. Provide strong leadership on relevant concepts and theory.
2. Write and supervise publications and other scientific communications related to research activities.
3. Communicate science effectively for policy and practice.
4. Disseminate research in international conferences and other relevant workshops and events.
Mobilize resources
1. Lead and contribute to research proposals in support of CIFOR-ICRAF’s GEW, GESI, Peru/ Latin America and global strategies.
2. Explore potential funding opportunities and engage with donor agencies and philanthropic organizations.
Collaborate across CIFOR-ICRAF teams, themes and geographies
1. Lead collaboration and engagement across CIFOR-ICRAF with Indigenous, Afro-descendent and local community organizations
2. Coordinate the organizational commitment to rights-based approaches
3. Foster inter-disciplinary research and collaborate across themes and geographies on proposals and cross-team learning
Education, knowledge and experience • A PhD in geography, anthropology, political science, or a related field
• At least 10 years of experience in collaborative natural resource management or social science research
• Experience working on REDD+ processes at the global and national levels
• Experience working on rights, environmental justice, and GESI concerns at the global and national levels
• Experience in project management, including large budgets, and facilitating and managing partnerships.
• Experience designing and implementing engagement strategies to accelerate development and research impact.
• Supervise staff and consultants, including across regions.
• Established networks with government and other key stakeholders in Peru
• Strong communication skills, and excellent spoken and written English and Spanish.
Terms and conditions Terms and conditions
• This is a Globally Recruited Position (GRS). CIFOR-ICRAF offers competitive remuneration commensurate with skills and experience.
• The initial appointment will be for two (2) years, with a six-month probationary period, with the possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of the position and available resources.
• The duty station will be in Lima, Peru CIFOR-ICRAF Offices, however the duty station can be negotiable and will be determined in consultation with the selected candidate within the LAC region.
• Peruvian and Colombian nationals are particularly encouraged to apply.
