Work LocationThe Hague, in person / Hybrid or Remote Expected duration3 months extendable Duties and ResponsibilitiesThese are internship positions which are located in Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in the Hague, in person / Hybrid or Remote. OCHA is the part of the United Nations Secretariat responsible for bringing together humanitarian actors to ensure a coherent response to emergencies. OCHA also ensures there is a framework within which each actor can contribute to the overall response efforts. OCHA's mission is to mobilize and coordinate effective and principled humanitarian action in partnership with national and international actors in order to alleviate human suffering in disasters and emergencies; advocate the rights of people in need; promote preparedness and prevention and facilitate sustainable solutions. The internship is within the Digital Services Section (DSS). Within OCHA, DSS is dedicated to developing and maintaining innovative technology solutions that support the humanitarian community. The team plays a critical role in facilitating a rapid, effective, and principled response to crises, guided by humanitarian principles. Operating around the clock, DSS ensures that vital information is collected, processed, and disseminated efficiently. The team's work is pivotal in extending the reach of humanitarian aid, addressing increasing needs, drawing attention to overlooked crises, and providing decision-makers with timely and reliable information. Key Responsibilities: Research and Analysis: - Conduct a comprehensive review of existing literature on the ethical implications of tech partnerships in conflict settings. - Identify and analyze cases where tech companies have been involved in or impacted by armed conflict, human rights violations, or digital threats to civilians. - Map current partnerships between humanitarian organizations and tech companies, assessing potential risks and benefits. Policy and Guidance Development: - Draft internal briefing notes or discussion papers outlining ethical considerations and potential frameworks for responsible engagement with tech companies. - Develop options for OCHA and humanitarian actors to mitigate risks when partnering with tech companies, including due diligence checklists or partnership principles. Stakeholder Engagement: - Support consultations with internal and external stakeholders (e.g., legal, protection, data, and innovation teams) to gather perspectives on ethical tech engagement. - Contribute to the organization of roundtables or webinars to discuss findings and promote dialogue on digital ethics in humanitarian action. Content and Knowledge Sharing: - Create summaries or visual materials to communicate key ethical issues and recommendations to OCHA staff and partners. - Contribute to OCHA communities with curated content on digital ethics and responsible tech partnerships. Qualifications/special skillsApplicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelorโs degree or equivalent). Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Do you meet any of the above criteria?
