Work LocationGeneva Expected duration4-6 months Duties and ResponsibilitiesCreated in December 1999, the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) is the designated focal point in the United Nations system for the coordination of efforts to reduce disasters and to ensure synergies among the disaster reduction activities of the United Nations and regional organizations and activities in both developed and less developed countries. Led by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction (SRSG), UNDRR has over 150 staff located in its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and in regional offices. Specifically, UNDRR guides, monitors, analyses and reports on progress in the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supports regional and national implementation of the Framework and catalyses action and increases global awareness to reduce disaster risk working with U.N. Member States and a broad range of partners and stakeholders, including civil society, the private sector, parliamentarians and the science and technology community. The internship is for a maximum period of 4-6 months.This internship position is located in the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) in Geneva, Switzerland. The internship is UNPAID and full-time, in -person. Interns work five days per week. The intern will work under the supervision of the Head of Campaigns and Community. The intern will support the team in advancing the organizationโs strategic communications efforts, contribute to global campaigns aimed at promoting disaster risk reduction. Tasks will include: โข Support the development of clear and impactful messaging for campaigns aligned with UNDRRโs mission and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. โข Conduct research to identify effective communication strategies for target audiences, including governments, media professionals, and the general public. โข Contribute to the planning and implementation of UNDRRโs global campaigns, including the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, World Tsunami Awareness Day among others. โข Assist in developing branding materials and visual assets for campaign promotion, in coordination with colleagues from the team. โข Assist in coordinating with journalist, editors, and other media professionals to facilitate interviews, press briefing, and media coverage of UNDRR events and campaigns, especially for the upcoming GP2025. โข Track and evaluate media outreach efforts to measure the impact and reach of UNDRRโs messaging. โข Provide logistical and administrative support for organizing events including conferences, workshops and webinars. โข Conduct background research and prepare briefing materials as needed. โข Support the team with administrative tasks, including maintaining documentation, preparing meeting notes, and coordinating internal communications. โข Coordinate with other UNDRR teams, regional offices, and external partners to ensure successful execution of communication efforts. Qualifications/special skillsTo qualify for an internship with the United Nations, applicants must meet one of the following requirements: a) Be enrolled in or have completed the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelorโs level or equivalent). b) Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent or higher such as Masterโs degree or equivalent, Ph.D. or postgraduate degree); Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Be computer literate in standard software applications; especially MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Adobe InDesign and Illustration, and MS Teams. Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
