Under the overall supervision of the Chief of Mission and direct supervision of the program officer, IOM seeks a proactive individual to provide technical support in the implementation of the BMM programme in Malawi through, assisting in the coordination, implementation, monitoring of and reporting on activities under the migration protection component of the BMM programme

The Better Migration Management (BMM) programme aims to improve migration management in the region (Eastern and Southern Africa route)), and in particular, to address Trafficking in Persons (TiP) and Smuggling of Migrants (SOM) from and within the East and Horn of Africa (EHoA) region and Malawi. More specifically, the programme is expected to strengthen national and regional migration governance in accordance with the global and regional frameworks; increase national and cross-border cooperation on trafficking and smuggling cases between investigation, prosecution, courts and other state as well as non-state actors in accordance with international standards; and improve the prevention of trafficking in persons and protection of vulnerable migrants at local, national and regional level ensuring appropriate assistance and support for victims of trafficking in human beings, taking into accounts the gender specificity of the phenomenon and the particular vulnerability of women and children.

The overall Better Migration Management Programme is a regional, multi-year, multi-partner programme co-funded by the EU Trust Fund for Africa and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) coordinated by the Deutsche Gesellschaft fรผr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). IOM is one the main implementing partners for the programme along with UNODC, CIVIPOL and the British Council.

This two-year project will be implemented in the following countries โ€” Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda and Malawi. ย 

  1. Assist in the coordination and monitoring of the operational, administrative and financial aspects of the project in accordance with IOM policies and practices as well as donorโ€™s requirements.
  2. Keep the supervisor informed on the status of project implementation; identify gaps and suggest actions to improve implementation.ย 
  3. Participate in the development and adjustment of work plans, project budgets, Monitoring & Evaluation tools and standard operations procedures.ย 
  4. Coordinate the collection, verification and analysis of data and background information; update information management systems and social media platforms on project related activities including project awareness and visibility, summaries, press releases and other relevant materials.
  5. Coordinate timely preparation and dissemination of project reports in accordance with IOM procedures and donor requirements.ย 
  6. Liaise and coordinate with donors, partners, United Nations agencies, local authorities and stakeholders and government counterparts.ย 
  7. Contribute to the planning, development, organization and delivery of capacity building activities targeting IOM staff, government and civil society partners, implementing partners and communities.ย  ย 
  8. Attend relevant conferences, workshops, working groups, interagency coordination meetings, and other forums.
  9. Participate in the preparation of project proposals and a diverse range of communication products, concept notes and other planning documents.
  10. Supervise and provide training and technical guidance to project staff.
  11. Undertake duty travel relating to project implementation, monitoring visits, project assessments, liaison with counterparts, etc.ย 
  12. Perform other related duties as required.ย 

    EDUCATION

    • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Political or Social Sciences, International Relations, Development Studies, Migration Studies, Human Rights, Law or related fields from an accredited academic institution with two years of relevant professional experience; or,
    • Masterโ€™s degree in the above-mentioned fields

      EXPERIENCE

      • Experience in liaising with governmental authorities, national/international institutions, United Nations agencies and non-governmental organizations.
      • Experience in working with migrants, refugees, internally displaced persons, victims of trafficking and other vulnerable groups; and,
      • Prior work experience with international humanitarian organizations, non-government or government institutions/organization in a multi-cultural setting is an advantage.
