5 Steps to get a job in the United Nations

Mission and objectivesThe World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. WFPโ€™s efforts focus on emergency assistance, relief and rehabilitation, development aid and special operations.

ContextContext WFPโ€™s Indigenous Peoples Portfolio ensures WFPโ€™s assistance reaches Indigenous Peoples, and addresses their diverse needs, priorities, and experiences. Indigenous Peoples are at particular risk of being left behind, due to a complexity of factors including structural inequality and discrimination, displacement from encroachment on lands, conflict, and violence. This means WFP employees must be aware and equipped with tools, information and know-how to design and implement programming that is culturally appropriate, responds to their situations, and builds on Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ existing capacities and knowledge. Harnessing Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ knowledge and practices can play a critical role in environmental management, early warning, and food production. This work is done in close connection and alignment with WFPโ€™s emerging Inclusion Agenda. WFPโ€™s Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ portfolio includes: โ€ข Awareness raising campaign at the global level. โ€ข Evidence-based guidance to ensure a principled engagement across programming. โ€ข Field-based research to understand specific contexts and identify the food security needs of Indigenous Peoples across regions. โ€ข Capacity strengthening of employees and support to country offices. โ€ข Partnership building with key actors, i.e, Indigenous Peoplesโ€™ Organizations, academia, UN agencies and others. โ€ข Strategic engagement in relevant global and regional fora and debates The Indigenous Peoples Portfolio is looking for online volunteers to provide online simultaneous interpretation during meetings Interpretation will support WFP personnel, partners, and others at the country, regional, and global level as they undertake inclusive approaches when engaging with Indigenous Peoples.

Task DescriptionOnline volunteers will provide support to the Indigenous Peoples Portfolio by providing simultaneous interpretation during meetings (typically over Zoom or Teams meetings). Tasks will include liaising with the core team via email, scheduling meetings where interpretation is needed, coordinating logistics, and leading the process to ensure that all meeting participants can access the interpretation channels during online meetings, and assist with questions in the chat. Meetings will run on average 1 hour (range 30 minutes-2 hours). Approximately 1-3 meetings will need support per month. Volunteers may also be asked to support the translation of meeting outreach messages, minutes, and brief reports or notes for the record. All volunteers will also ensure that the translated terms are consistent across speech and documents and in line with a WFP formatting and global and country normative frameworks.
