Indonesia, with the longest coastline in the Asia-Pacific and extraordinary biodiversity, faces critical challenges from marine plastic pollution, which threatens over 31,000 plant species and thousands of animal species. As one of the world’s largest contributors to ocean plastic waste—producing up to 1.29 million tons annually—key issues include poor waste management, river pollution, tourism, and fishing activities. To address these, the government has implemented a national action plan emphasizing improved waste infrastructure, public awareness campaigns, and recycling. Presidential Regulation No. 83 of 2018 set an ambitious target to reduce marine plastic waste by 70% by 2025, achieving a 41.68% reduction by 2023. Alongside advancing a circular economy and small-scale economic activities, Indonesia has strengthened international cooperation, signing a 2024 Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the UAE to combat plastic waste leakage. This partnership, supported by the UNDP, focuses on installing waste barriers in rivers and collecting marine debris to protect ecosystems, aligning with Indonesia's zero- landfill strategy for 2030.
Given these efforts and environmental challenges, the effective knowledge management and outreach function are vital to Indonesia’s progress in addressing marine plastic pollution. The recruitment of a Knowledge Management and Outreach assistant would bolster the dissemination of information, coordination among stakeholders, and public awareness needed to support the government’s national action plans. This role would also enhance Indonesia's partnerships, such as the UAE collaboration, ensuring the success of initiatives like establishing river waste barriers and promoting sustainable waste management. By facilitating the adoption of circular economy practices and fostering collaboration across sectors, the officer would advance Indonesia’s environmental objectives, protect biodiversity, and help meet critical targets, including zero landfill by 2030 and a 70% waste reduction by 2025.
