You are applying to the ILO generic internship roster, which is published twice per year. Department(s)
OSHE, positioned within the Governance and Tripartism Department, assists member States in realizing the fundamental principle and right at work of a safe and heathy working environment, through the improvement of occupational safety and health (OSH) frameworks and the promotion of a preventative safe and healthy culture. It promotes an exchange of good practices and initiatives to improve OSH, labour administration and inspection; it undertakes research on relevant topics, designs and manages relevant technical cooperation projects, including provision of technical advice, drafting and revising OSH law and country profiles.
OSHE works on a broad portfolio, including OSH and climate hazards, biological hazards, physical and ergonomic hazards, sound chemicals and waste management, psychosocial risks and workplace health promotion. It is involved in the organization of global and regional congresses, events and campaigns, as well as in global multilateral engagements concerning topics pertaining to OSH. This includes, notably the annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work campaign, involvement in interagency working groups and task forces, among other various engagements.
Within OSHE, the Policy and Systems Team (PST) has a number of key priorities, one of them being OSH and climate hazards, including extreme weather events and changing weather patterns. The PST conducts thematic research, produces technical reports and provides technical guidance to constituents on this emerging risk and growing area of work.
Learning areas
As an intern in occupational safety and health and climate hazards, you will gain understanding about a wide variety of climate hazards as an OSH risk and learn about current trends in national and workplace level policies. You will also gain exposure and knowledge in regards to the tripartite governance structure of the ILO and its engagement in multilateral working groups and task forces related to OSH and climate hazards.
You will gain experience in working with specialists who are involved in tasks such as such as conducting literature searches, data collection and analysis and working to support activities related to an upcoming ILO Meeting of Experts on OSH and extreme weather events and changing weather patterns.
Specific duties would consist of the following:
- Support preparations for the ILO Meeting of Experts on OSH and extreme weather events and changing weather patterns, including support to the development of background report and related materials;
- Conduct background research on OSH and climate risks, including collection of best practices, lessons learned and case studies;
- Assist in drafting summaries of key policy documents, reports, and research papers related to OSH and climate hazards;
- Contribute to the analysis of national policies and workplace-level initiatives addressing OSH and climate hazards;
- Monitor and track emerging trends, developments, and news related to climate hazards and their impact on occupational safety and health;
- Assist in the preparation of PowerPoints, fact sheets, briefs and short reports in the area of OSH and climate hazards as applicable;
- Provide logistical and administrative support for the ILO Meeting of Experts, including note-taking, preparing meeting minutes, and organizing relevant materials;
- Undertake any other related task as requested by the supervisor or Branch Chief.
Interns should expect to devote 10% to 20% of their time to administrative tasks.
This position will be under the supervision and guidance of the Policy and Systems Team Lead.
Education
A graduate degree in occupational safety and health, public health, physiology, climate sciences or a related field.
The candidate must be enrolled at least in a Master's degree programme or have completed such a programme no longer than 1 year ago
Experience
Relevant work experience in the area of occupational safety and health and climate hazards would be important for the duties related to the ILO Meeting of Experts.
Languages
Excellent command (both oral and written) of of English and the other ILOโs official languages (French, Spanish) are an asset.

Selection process:
Following a first screening by the Human Resources Development Department (HRD), hiring departments will short-list applicants. You will be directly contacted should an internship opportunity match your profile. If you have not been contacted by any department within six months after your application, you can consider that you have not been selected by any department for this roster. If still eligible, you may apply to the next roster.
If shortlisted, you may be contacted by the hiring department for a written test and/or interview. The ILO may use communication technologies such as Skype, Video or teleconference, e-mail, etc for the assessment and evaluation of candidates.
Stipend/Financial compensations:
As an intern in Geneva, you will receive a stipend of 2450 CHF per month from the ILO, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive 2450 CHF per month. Your travel to Geneva will be at your own expense. In addition to the amounts referred above, each intern shall receive the amount of CHF45 per month, or the equivalent amount in the currency in which the monthly stipend is paid, which is a contribution from the Office towards the cost of medical insurance to cover the period of the internship.
Qualified candidates from non- and under- represented countries may be eligible for a special fund that provides financial assistance for round-trip airfare (economy class) in addition to the stipend.
Insurance:
Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
