Result of ServiceDevelopment of housing and slum transformation document Work LocationNairobi Expected duration6 Months Duties and ResponsibilitiesBACKGROUND UN-Habitat is mandated to develop, test, disseminate and support country-level implementation of pro-poor and gender responsive land tools and approaches. In the past years, UN-Habitat and its Regional Office for the Arab states have been expanding their work on land to protect housing, land and property rights of vulnerable groups, including women, displaced people and migrants. People living in fragile contexts encounter multiple obstacles in enjoying their land and housing rights: practical, legal, political, economic and cultural. Enchaining access to land and tenure security for vulnerable groups, including women, is crucial for poverty reduction, as well as for triggering broader social and economic development, and for the full realisation of human rights, peace and stability. The Land, Housing and Shelter Section (LHSS), part of the Global Solutions Division at UN-Habitat, leads the development and implementation of normative and operational approaches aimed at ensuring equitable access to land, adequate housing, slum transformation and secure tenure. The Section supports the UN-Habitat mandate by offering technical expertise, policy advice, and capacity-building support to member states, local authorities, civil society, and other partners. Its projects focus on housing and slum upgrading, Land-related research and partnerships, awareness-raising, capacity development, dissemination of inclusive and gender-responsive land tools, and the implementation of targeted land interventions in selected countries and communities. Under the overall supervision of the Chief of LHSS and the direct oversight of the LHSS thematic lead, the consultant will contribute to the development of housing and slum transformation document and to the development of key components of housing projects, support their effective implementation, and coordinate global engagement with partners to ensure the success of both ongoing and new initiatives. RESPONSIBILITIES The consultant will: • Draft and review housing and slum upgrading documents, publications and tools • Provide technical advice on affordable housing strategies, sustainable housing, and inclusive housing finance mechanisms and slum transformation interventions. • Contribute to the conceptualization and proposals development of housing and slums-related projects, • Draft guidelines, reports, case studies on affordable, adequate, and sustainable housing and slum transformation interventions. • Assist in drafting communications material and content for the housing platform, in collaboration with the communication team. Qualifications/special skillsAdvanced education degree in one of the following fields is required: housing studies, law, international development, urban planning, or related social sciences is required. Possession of a relevant postgraduate qualification is desirable. Relevant work experience in the above-mentioned fields can be accepted in lieu of a degree. PhD is desirable. A minimum of 7 years of demonstrated working experience in research, data analysis, and report writing is required. Experience in working on housing research is required. Experience in working with an international organisation with a housing mandate is desirable. LanguagesFluency in oral and written English is required. Additional InformationNot available.
