BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE OF THE ASSIGNMENT:

The United Nations World Food Programme is the worldโ€™s largest humanitarian agency fighting to end hunger worldwide. The mission is to achieve Zero Hunger in our lifetimes. Every day, WFP works worldwide to ensure that no one goes to bed hungry and that the poorest of most vulnerable, particularly women and children, can access the nutritious food they need. In WFP Sudan, the current Country Strategic Programme (CSP,2019-2023 and extended to 2024) establishes a strategic outcome that food-insecure residents in targeted areas have sustainably improved nutrition by 2024.

Sudan is facing a severe nutrition crisis, worsened by conflict, displacement, and strained health services. Wasting is alarmingly high among children aged under five years and pregnant and breastfeeding women or girls. Recent assessments show Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) rates exceeding 30percent in some conflict-affected areas, far above emergency thresholds. An estimated 3.66 million children and 1.2 million pregnant or breastfeeding women or girls are acutely wasted, with child malnutrition up by over 22 percent since early 2023. The conflict has forced over 10 million people to flee, further deepening food insecurity and malnutrition across the country.

In Sudan, WFP leads efforts to treat and prevent malnutrition in collaboration with the nutrition and food security clusters and key partners. Together with the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) and others, WFP is committed to strengthening prevention and treatment strategies, aligning with the new WHO guidelines on wasting management to enhance recovery and improve lives of vulnerable populations.

    JOB PURPOSE

Reporting directly to the Head of Nutrition and School-Based Programmes, the Nutritionist will lead the development of a comprehensive, context-specific implementation plan for the WHO guidelines on wasting management in Sudan. He/she will also provide immediate technical and programmatic support for WFPโ€™s emergency nutrition response.
