Danish Refugee Council, one of the worldโ€™s leading humanitarian NGOs, is currently looking for a highly motivated Economic Recovery Community Worker for our operations in Sheraro, Tigray Field Office.

About the job

The Community Worker is a community-based position responsible for direct daily engagement with project beneficiaries and community members. Working under the supervision of the Economic Recovery Team Leader and in close collaboration with the Economic Recovery Assistant, the Community Worker serves as the primary link between the project and the community. The role focuses on community mobilization, group facilitation, beneficiary support, data collection, and ensuring continuous communication between communities and the project team.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

Community Mobilization & Engagement

Conduct daily community mobilization activities to raise awareness about project activities and opportunities Organize and facilitate community meetings, awareness sessions, and information dissemination events Identify and register eligible beneficiaries based on vulnerability criteria, with special focus on widowed women heads of households Build trust and maintain strong relationships with community members, leaders, and local authorities Encourage community participation and ownership of project activities Conduct house-to-house visits to engage with vulnerable households Support the recruitment and selection of beneficiaries for various project activities

Farmer Group & VSLA Support

Facilitate the formation and ongoing operation of Farmer Groups at community level Support the establishment and weekly meetings of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs). Attend and support farmer group and VSLA meetings to ensure regular participation Help VSLA members with basic record-keeping, savings collection, and loan documentation Encourage peer-to-peer learning and mutual support among group members Follow up with group members who miss meetings or face challenges Support women members to actively participate and take leadership roles in groups Monitor group dynamics and report any conflicts or issues to the Economic Recovery Assistant and Team Leader

Training & Demonstration Support

Support lead farmers and Agricultural Extension Workers in delivering training to farmer families Encourage women and vulnerable community members to attend training sessions Support hands-on demonstrations at demonstration plots and farms Organize and facilitate field days and farmer-to-farmer learning events Follow up with trainees to ensure knowledge and skills are being applied

Livestock & Agricultural Activity Support

Assist in the verification and registration of beneficiaries for chicken and goat distribution Support the distribution of chickens, goats, and veterinary inputs to beneficiaries Conduct follow-up visits to monitor livestock health, feeding practices, and productivity Connect beneficiaries with veterinary services when needed Help farmers maintain demonstration plots and practice improved agricultural techniques Monitor the use and maintenance of solar irrigation pumps in the community Encourage adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices Document and report livestock mortality, diseases, or other challenges

Community Feedback & Communication

Collect feedback, complaints, suggestions, and concerns from community members Document and immediately report urgent issues or protection concerns to the Team Leader Ensure confidential and safe channels for community members to provide feedback Follow up on community concerns and communicate responses back to the community Conduct regular community information sessions to update beneficiaries on project progress Serve as a bridge between the community and the project team

Data Collection & Reporting

Collect daily activity data using smartphones/tablets (Kobo Collect or similar tools) Maintain accurate records of beneficiary lists, attendance sheets, and distribution records Conduct simple household surveys and Post-Distribution Monitoring (PDM) visits Prepare daily and weekly activity reports for the Economic Recovery Assistant and Team Leader

Coordination & Collaboration

Coordinate closely with the Economic Recovery Assistant on daily activities Work collaboratively with other Community Workers in neighboring communities Liaise with local kebele administration, community leaders, and religious leaders Participate in community-level coordination meetings Represent the project professionally and maintain DRC's reputation in the community Coordinate with other DRC program staff working in the same community

Experience and technical competencies:

Up to one-year experience working with communities in rural development, agriculture, or social programs Experience on community-based program Experience working directly with farmers and rural households Knowledge of local community structures, customs, and traditions Experience working with vulnerable populations including widows and conflict-affected communities Strong community mobilization and interpersonal skills Ability to facilitate small group meetings and discussions Basic understanding of agriculture and livestock management Ability to use smartphones/tablets for basic data collection Ability to maintain simple records and documentation Cultural sensitivity and respect for community values Understanding of gender-sensitive approaches Familiarity with participatory approaches and community engagement tools Basic literacy and numeracy skills

EDUCATION: (include certificates, licenses, etc.)

Diploma or bachelorโ€™s degree in agriculture, Agricultural Extension, Rural Development, Cooperative Studies, or related field

LANGUAGE: (indicate fluency level)

English (good communication in speaking and writing) Fluency in (written and spoken) Tigrinya and Amharic Good knowledge of English language
