Mission and objectivesWorld Health Organization leads and champions global efforts to give everyone, everywhere an equal chance to live a healthy life. Polio remains a Public Health Emergency of International Concern and WHOโs Polio Eradication team, based in Amman, Jordan, provides ongoing technical and operational support to countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) working to stop polio transmission and protect against virus importation.
ContextThe Region remains at the forefront of the global fight against polio, as home to the worldโs last two endemic countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan. While significant progress has been made, the resurgence of wild poliovirus in both countries in 2024, along with outbreaks of variant poliovirus in Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, and Gaza, underscores the urgent need for intensified efforts. To seize the opportunity to end polio and respond swiftly to ongoing outbreaks, the regional programme must work with renewed urgency across all disciplinesโincluding communicationโto ensure that commitments are effectively translated into action. This response includes, but is not limited to, the timely production of public- and donor-facing communication materials. With an increasing number of digital platforms available to the programme and a growing need to share information on progress being made, challenges being faced and advocacy opportunities, the production of high-quality digital content, including infographics, GIFs, and short social media videos, is an emerging priority, particularly from a donor communications perspective. To enhance stakeholders' understanding of WHOโs role in polio eradication in the Eastern Mediterranean Region and to increase the programmeโs visibility, the Communications Unit of the WHO polio eradication programme, based in Amman, Jordan, requires additional support in digital communications and digital content production. This role will help strengthen WHO polio programme communications, advocacy, and outreach efforts.
