Mission and objectivesUNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a global organization dedicated to saving lives, protecting rights and building a better future for people forced to flee their homes because of conflict and persecution. We lead international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. Our vision is a world where every person forced to flee can build a better future. Formally known as the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1950 in the aftermath of the Second World War to help the millions of people who had lost their homes. Today, UNHCR works in 136 countries. We provide life-saving assistance, including shelter, food, water and medical care for people forced to flee conflict and persecution, many of whom have nobody left to turn to. We defend their right to reach safety and help them find a place to call home so they can rebuild their lives. Long term, we work with countries to improve and monitor refugee and asylum laws and policies, ensuring human rights are upheld. In everything we do UNHCR considers refugees and those forced to flee as partners, putting those most affected at the centre of planning and decision-making. Source: www.unhcr.org
ContextWithin the Global Infrastructure Section (GIS) of the Global Mobility and Infrastructure Service (GMIS) under the Division of Financial and Administrative Management (DFAM) operates the UNHCR Shop. The UNHCR Shop’s purpose is to procure, sell, and dispatch core visibility and promotional items to UNHCR staff and operations worldwide. It supports Public Outreach by providing items for events and helps ensure brand compliance across the full range of visibility items and merchandise. The overall aim of the UNHCR Shop is to support colleagues globally, mobilize additional financial support for UNHCR, and raise awareness and empathy for forcibly displaced people. To achieve this aim, UNHCR Shop is incorporating e-commerce and offering a customized user experience through its digital platforms. The UNHCR Shop is planning to migrate its online store to the Shopify platform to enhance the online shopping experience, improve inventory management, and customize access and payment methods for different customers such as offices, individual customers and other external entities.
Task DescriptionUnder the direct supervision of the Assistant UNHCR Shop Officer the Online Volunteer will assess the current Shopify platform and suggest a customization plan based on the required features. The Volunteer will then perform the necessary custom developments based on the plan that was previously agreed upon and approved. These will include the following: 1. Implement a sign-in system that restricts access to users with specific email domain tags. 2. Configure a custom warehousing/multi-warehouse setup and shipping methods. 3. Integrate UNHCR address book functionality for preset addresses and allow free text entry as well. 4. Develop custom payment methods, including specific options for UNHCR and other organizations. 5. Explore the possible implementation of 3rd party payment gateways. 6. The Volunteer is expected to provide regular progress updates to the Assistant UNHCR Shop Officer, along with ensuring prompt communication regarding any issues or delays. Expected output and deliverables: 1. Fully functional Shopify store with restricted access features. 2. Multi-warehouse setup configured and operational. 3. Integrated and functional UNHCR address book. 4. Custom payment methods configured and integrated. 5. Final project report and documentation upon completion – the expected length is a maximum of 4 pages, listing the tasks, solutions, and the mechanisms behind them. Note: UNHCR will provide further details on the requirements, materials, and data sources needed upon commencement of the project. UNHCR holds a Shopify license, and access to the account will be granted to the Online Volunteer at the start of the project. The Volunteer is expected to use their own devices while performing the assigned tasks. UNHCR will not be able to provide any further application or license for this project.
