Org. Setting and ReportingThis position is located in the Statistics Service of the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The Data Scientist reports to the Chief of a Unit and will receive the overall guidance of the Director of the Statistics Service. The Data Scientist will be part of a team that will focus on strengthening capacity-building and on providing support to developing countries in data collection tools, methods and reporting for the measurement of South-South cooperation. ResponsibilitiesWithin delegated authority, the Data Scientist will be responsible for the following duties: โข Organize, design, plan and carry out the collection, evaluation, analysis, compilation and dissemination of statistical data related to trade and development. โข Work with member Statesโ experts and other stakeholders to identify opportunities for leveraging data for South-South cooperation. โข Develop and analyze statistical databases to release South-South and other development analysis. โข Assess the effectiveness and accuracy of new data sources and data gathering techniques. โข Develop standards on statistical concepts, definitions, classifications, custom data models and algorithms to apply to data sets. โข Use predictive modeling to increase and optimize entity experiences, benefit realization and other business outcomes. โข Organize and participates in seminars, working groups and expert meetings as technical resource person, promoting sharing of good practices. โข Develop quality assurance and testing frameworks and test model quality. โข Coordinate with different functional teams to implement models and monitor outcomes โข Develop processes and tools to monitor and analyze model performance and data accuracy. โข Perform other duties as assigned. Work ExperienceA minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in the collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of official statistics and data science, data analytics or related area is required. Experience in developing and compiling composite development indicators is desirable. Experience implementing or facilitating statistical capacity building activities and training for developing economies is desirable. Experience of data science tools such as Matlab, SPSS, SAS, or Statistical Programming Languages such as R, Python, Javascript or related is desirable.
