Result of Service1. Technical input into the programme of the national training workshops in Zimbabwe is provided by 26 May 2025. 2. Three presentations on the key provisions of the Basel Convention, Plastic Waste Amendments and enforcement matters reflecting feedback from the Secretariat and the Zimbabwe project team are available by 4 June 2025. 3. Presentations delivered with questions answered and practical exercises are conducted at the two national workshops in Zimbabwe by 13 June 2025. Work LocationHome based Expected duration20 May to 19 June Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe United Nations Environment Programme is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The Secretariat of the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, the Rotterdam Convention on the Prior Informed Consent Procedure for Certain Hazardous Chemicals and Pesticides in International Trade and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants brings together the three leading multilateral environmental agreements that share the common objective of protecting human health and the environment from hazardous chemicals and wastes. The post is home-based and will support training and capacity development activities under the Basel Convention. Under the specific supervision and guidance of the Programme Officer, the incumbent will perform the following functions: a. Provide technical input into the training workshop programmes. b. Prepare the presentations on the key provisions of the Basel Convention, Plastic Waste Amendments and enforcement matters for the training workshops in consultation with the Secretariat and the Zimbabwe project team. c. Delivery of the presentations and support conducting the practical exercises at the two national workshops in Zimbabwe on enforcement of the Basel Convention and Plastic Waste Amendments. Qualifications/special skillsAcademical qualifications: An advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in law or environmental sciences or engineering is required. A first-level degree in combination with 2 additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. • At least 7 years’ work experience in the field of environmental law, including the multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) on the national level is required. • Demonstrable knowledge of the Basel Convention provisions pertaining to the implementation of the Basel Convention in developing countries is desired.
