Background
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), in collaboration with TechnoServe, Inc., is conducting a study to develop an innovative, cost-effective approach for measuring and analyzing food loss and waste (FLW) in Kenyaโs agrifood chains. The focus is on highly nutritious, perishable foods and post-farmgate value chain activities, including aggregation, transportation, wholesale, and retail.
IFPRI is seeking a qualified consultant to conduct surveys of aggregation centers, wholesale markets, consumer markets, intermediaries, and retailers involved in the tomato, mango, and indigenous leafy greens (ILGs) value chains in October โ November 2025. The position is based in Kenya.
Scope of work
Preparation and presentation of documentation to obtain ethics approval from local IRB.
Translate and pretest survey instruments.
Program survey instruments using software such as SurveyCTO.
Conduct census tomato, mango, and ILG value chain actors in the 23 markets: Wakulima, Muthurwa, Makutano, Kimana, Karatina, Kerugoya, Kangemi market, Kangemi roadside stalls, Githurai, Githurai 45, Kiambu Town, City Park, Ngara Fig Tree, Wote, Mutomo, Dagoretti Corner, Machakos Town, City, Gikomba, Magena, Karurumo, Kawangware, Kibera.
Survey of 460 market actors visited daily for 7 days (in-person).
Survey of 300 intermediaries (single-visit, in-person or by phone).
Survey of 240 informal retailers (single-visit, in-person).
Data cleaning and formatting.
Deliverables
Local IRB / Ethics committee approval certificate for the study.
Translated survey instruments.
CAPI version of survey instruments in SurveyCTO or similar software.
Tomato, mango, and ILGs value chain actors census in the 23 specified markets.
Clean and formatted datasets of market actors (460 observations), intermediaries (300), and informal retailers (240).
Field work report.
Required qualifications of the consultant / survey team leader
Experience in large-scale data collection in Kenya.
Experience in collaboration with international organizations.
Experience in building trust and good relations with interviewees and market actors.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Experience in agricultural economics, rural development, nutrition, and/or food security and related fields.
Experience in working with Kenyan IRB institutions
Preferred qualifications
Formal registration in Kenya (such as Certificate of Incorporation).
