The International Monetary Fund (IMF) works to achieve sustainable growth and prosperity for 191 member countries. It does so by supporting economic policies that promote financial stability and monetary cooperation, which are essential to increase productivity, job creation, and economic well-being.
The IMFโs Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (OAP), located in Tokyo, Japan, is the IMF's window on the region. The Office takes the lead in the IMF's on-the-ground involvement in regional cooperation and contributes to economic surveillance and research, supports regional capacity development programs including through peer-to-peer learning events, promotes the understanding and two-way dialogue of the IMF in Asia and the Pacific as well as recruitment from the region.
OAP is seeking a Communications Officer for a full-time local contractual position, who will lead all communications and outreach initiatives for the OAP and work closely with the IMFโs Asia Pacific and Communications Departments in Washington DC. The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal.
Under the OAP Directorโs supervision, key responsibilities for the Communications Officer include:
- Working closely with headquarters, develop and implement strategies to enhance the IMF's presence and engagement across the Asia-Pacific region and in Japan.
- Maintain relationships with media, civil society, academics, and thought leaders.
- Organize various outreach events, including briefings and conferences.
- Manage media outreach, including press briefings and interviews.
- Disseminate IMF messages in both English and Japanese.
- Prepare and disseminate OAP periodicals to report on office activities.
- Manage OAPโs digital presence through OAP websites, social media channels and other digital platforms.
- Monitor economic and IMF-related news.
- Publish content on the IMFโs digital channels and create public information products for outreach.
- Support the IMFโs recruitment efforts in Asia and the Pacific and outreach to educational and other institutions.
- Review the effectiveness of communications activities periodically and as necessary propose the revision of strategies.
Competencies:
- Comprehensive communications experience, including media relations and social media.
- Strong presentation and interaction skills with various stakeholders.
- Excellent writing, editing, and research skills.
- Strategic thinking, with the ability to manage details.
- Familiarity with the IMF and knowledge of the Asia-Pacific region.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines.
- Effective teamwork and relationship-building skills.
Qualifications and Experience:
- A degree in communications, journalism, public relations, media studies, or a related field.
- Over five years of relevant communications experience, preferably in journalism or public relations.
- Fluency in both English and Japanese.
- Experience in stakeholder engagement and recruitment is a strong asset.
This Tokyo-based position offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience. A successful candidate from outside of Japan, and who is not a Japanese citizen, will be expected to obtain by themselves their necessary work visa for Japan and to relocate to Japan at their own expense. OAP will provide supporting documentation needed for the application for a work visa, including the offer of employment letter.
